Entitled neighbor demands that HOA-exempt residents in the neighborhood join, resident refuse: '[He's] upset because we're not included in their misery'

This frustrated neighbor could not stand the fact that some folks in their quiet suburb were living in HOA-exempt homes.

I guess misery loves company, am I right?

Here's the deal. It is the not the fault of the author for lucking out and signing the paperwork to buy home in an HOA neighborhood without having the burden of being a part of said HOA. Sure, one wants to be envious of the author's situation, but being envious of someone does not mean you necessarily want to take their lucky situation away from them. 

It takes a certain kind of person to want to take someone else's happiness away and bring them down to their level, and yet, we all know those individuals in our lives. The key is to keep those unhappy and unkind people at arm's length as much as you can. Unfortunately, in this instance, there was only so much the author could do with this neighbor, since they were doomed to live next to one another for the foreseeable future.   • Here's hoping that this author can stand their ground and continue to avoid joining the HOA. After all, the neighbor doesn't even like being a part of the HOA. He just cannot endure the misery while knowing the person next door does not have to follow the same rules and regulations. What a terrible personality trait. Even if he succeeds, is he really going to enjoy day-to-day life knowing that he just made enemies with his neighbor all because they were able to live freely?

  • TriCounty Retail 12h ago Hopefully you are not in a state where they can force you to join the HOA. In Texas there was a case where a development was forced to join an HOA because the city or county didn't want to maintain the roads and streelights anymore.
