AITA for snitching to the teacher?

Hi everyone, Last week we took a Spanish exam. I'm in a class of 20, equally balanced between boys and girls.
  • 03
The boys created a group for them in the beginning of the session and some of them refused to join the common class group.
  • 04
Anyway, fast forward to last week, when we took our mid terms. The exams are divided into several parts, one of them being Essay Writing.
  • 05
We took a mock test a week before the exam so we knew the pattern and some basic topics.
  • 06
After the exam, I noticed the boys asking each other if they wrote as decided. One of the girls asked them what did they mean and they said they already had the test paper beforehand.
  • 07
Then they showed us a picture on their phones of the test paper shared on their group at least 10 days prior to the exam.

  • 09
I admit I got really annoyed because the exam was hard and I felt it was really unfair to the rest of us.
  • 10
So I reported it, in confidence to the teacher. I told her that some of the students had access to the question paper beforehand and maybe she could keep it in mind when grading.
  • 11
I did not name anyone. Now my female classmate is telling me I should not have done it because they might be held back and because they are boys they actually need to pass the exam to get a job.
  • 12
However I operate on the principle of "fuck around find out." So Reddit, AITA for reporting this incident to the teacher?
  • 13
Competitive_Test6697 Chances are the teacher would have noticed all the boys answers were very similar if not the same. And why do specifically boys need to pass this to get a job

PhotoForward2499 NTA - cheating is not cool, if they put as much time into actual study they would have done fine. Also your friend is off the rails. The boys need a job? and you don't? pssshhhh

Nice-Newspaper-4778 NTA. If they didn't want consequences, they shouldn't have cheated in the first place.

seasonseasonseas After the exam, I noticed the boys asking each other if they wrote as decided. If they are dumb enough to all answer the same way then any decently capable teacher would pick up on this collusion.

HappySummerBreeze You were foolish to tell anyone except the teacher
  • 19
beatlefool42 NTA. It's never wrong to report violations of academic integrity.

Capokid If they all score much higher than normal, it can actually mess up your grade and turn say a c into ad or f because they may be grading on a 'bell curve' where you are scored RELATIVE to your classmates instead of just on your own merits. So if a few people score 100% every one else's grade could drop in that class.

badlilbishh NTA but why the heck would you tell someone else what you did?? The way your classmate responded tells me she's definitely gonna go snitch on you and tell them you snitched.

DarthRed Yoga NTA. I am curious why you told anybody you reported it though because you know it's going to get back to them. Which is fine, because they cheated and that's that. But then I just don't know why you bothered with doing it in confidence to start with.
