‘I tap the guy on the shoulder and ask, “What’s the problem?!”’: Entitled gym patron tries to kick out lead trainer’s daughter who came to get her mom after work, only to get shut down once the trainer steps in and sets him straight

A fitness trainer's young daughter walks in at the end of her mom's shift to tell her it's time to go. Before she can reach the office, a regular gym member swoops in to play hero of the dumbest kind. He blocks the girl's path and starts parroting the age restriction policy like it's national law. This isn't security or staff, just a guy whose biceps have convinced him he's in charge. Then mom spots the commotion, walks over, and the man realizes he's policing her kid. Nothing deflates faster than self-importance in the wild.  

There's something uniquely tragic about a man who discovers a gym rule and decides it's his calling.

  • People like this exist everywhere. They think authority is open-source, free to claim by anyone with a loud voice and no sense of proportion. They confuse participation with management, convinced the world will collapse if they’re not personally enforcing the rules. Gyms collect them because they’re the perfect habitat, mirrors everywhere, routine power trips, and just enough structure to make them feel righteous. The result is always the same: someone with too much energy and too little purpose telling someone else how to exist.  

  • Edit: I work for a gym where I'm the lead trainer. A while back my boss put an age restriction in place forbidding anyone under twenty from coming to the gym to workout because the teenagers beforehand were breaking rules left and right which made my boss put in the age restriction.

  • Should note that restriction forbids anyone under twenty from using the equipment, some teens go after school to wait to be picked up if they don't have a car in a designated teen hang out lounge providing they have proof that a parent has a gym membership proof being providing parents name and if parents have membership they can use the teen lounge.

Guy tells her more louder, "You need to leave kid!" I hear this and see the guy blocking her from getting by to where I am and I abruptly end my talk saying I'll talk to the person soon.

  • The best part is that the mother doesn’t need to yell. She just points out that staff handle staff work. It’s the simplest possible lesson in boundaries. Yet it feels revolutionary to someone who thinks membership fees come with a badge. Maybe next time he’ll spot his reflection and realize rule enforcement builds smaller muscles than restraint.

  • OP Goddessviking86 If one of my kids is there to pick me up after work they're easily identifiable by the photos and walking by the equipment area is the way to my office so if anyone tries to report my kid being near the equipment my coworkers can say, "that's one of the trainers kids going to their moms office to get her."

  • Particular_Class 4130 Don't know what kind of gym you work at but in my city no reputable gym ever allows anyone in the gym area with street shoes on. Actually no gym allows. anyone in that hasn't been buzzed in by a staff member. A gym that allows people to come and go as they like and with their outdoor street shoes on no less doesn't sound very professional to me. Also a designated hang out area for teens when teens are strictly prohibited from entering? Why not just a general waiting area? W

  • OP Goddessviking86 So let me ask you this: if a gym employee forgets to bring a lunch and has Uber Eats or somewhere else do a delivery because the delivery person doesn't dress the part for the gym does that mean they're not dressed professionally to do their job of making deliveries? Same for a fed ex or ups delivery worker who is bringing by packages for the gym? The mailman or mailwoman? A person who isn't dressed yet in their workout clothes can bring a fitness bag and change in the locker

  • Particular_Class 4130 It's not about being dressed professionally. Outdoor shoes are not allowed in gyms because they they track in dirt and mud. They gyms I go to provide cubby holes. at the door for shoes. So people come in the front door, they move to the side to remove their shoes and put them in the designated area. Then they go to the front desk which is right at the entrance to show proof of membership to a staff member and then they get buzzed it or they swipe their card in a card reader

  • OP Goddessviking86 So that's gyms you've been to, not all gyms are like that with shoes or boots. Outdoor shoes as well what if someone came in for an interview, Are those considered not gym shoes? there's also a thing called door mats where people can clean off their shoes. For proof of membership for my gym I work for you have to show gym membership card or have them look you up in the system and if anyone tried sneaking in then front desk calls security to deal with troublemakers.

  • defhermit You shouldn't need someone to come into your place of work to retrieve you. You should be aware of when your shift is ending and that someone has agreed to pick you up and it is time to start paying attention to incoming texts or just wait outside for your ride.

  • artteacherforlife I hate to hear that this happened but you handled it very appropriately. I'm glad you stuck up for your daughter also. I'm sure she appreciated it also. Some people just don't like kids and anytime they have an opportunity to be disrespectful to a kid they take the opportunity.
