‘I am livid, I'm truly ready to pack my stuff and leave’: Woman discovers her husband secretly co-signed a $76K loan for his freeloading, reckless 37-year-old son who lives rent-free and never pays him back

This husband decided to spend his golden years paying off loans he didn't even take. His 37-year-old son, a man whose resume includes theft, DUIs, and emotional terrorism, has been treating his father's credit like an open bar. Cars, furniture, a $5,000 credit card, all under Daddy Dearest's name. The father co-signed the $76,000 loan, and the son repaid him in dishonor and DoorDash receipts.  Some men retire with hobbies, others retire with terrible financial decisions. 
The wife, meanwhile, is left holding a collapsing house, a loan against her 401k, and the dawning realization that her husband has been gaslighting her with the confidence of a man who thinks joint finances mean "joint confusion." Every attempt to talk about it turns into deflection, denial, or an emotional trapeze act. The stepson's freeloading is old news, but watching it backed by actual debt is the kind of betrayal Excel sheets were invented to process.

The saintly father insists on protecting his grown child from consequences, while the responsible spouse slowly morphs into the family accountant and villain.   • Dufus is paying his utilities and cell phone bill, and getting take out with this credit card that is in Ron's name.Dufus used Ron's truck a few months ago and an ezpass bill comes in the mail.

  • EDIT: Ron and I have been together for 22 yrs. Ron is the breadwinner and 16 years my senior. Ron has never been forthcoming about the financial situation with Dufus.

  • Dufus got a DI then 2 weeks later Dufus got pulled over for the same thing except he was driving a 18 wheeler for work.

  • CallMeSiren you keep talking about all these things your stepson is doing, but i haven't read a single word about you and your husband discussing a plan to make this adult child more independent. i also don't see anything here about the actions you have taken to make your husband see how serious you are about leaving if he doesn't cut the cord. what does your husband think of his son's station in life? does he think this is an acceptable way for a 37 year old to live?

  • LizzieBuzzy This is sad. Your husband can't fund his son's life. He can get furniture on FB marketplace for next to nothing. I understand some adults have limitations and can't live a selfsustaining life, but giving Dufus a free roof over his head should be it. This credit card needs closed ASAP and unfortunately your husband sounds like he is in no financial shape to retire.

  • bcjc78 Not over reacting. Check your credit report immediately, and start decoupling your finances as best you can. Even if you stay with him which is a a big IF I would suggest separating your finances ASAP.
