‘[That's] an oxymoron’: Supervisor demands pregnant employee serves 8-hours of “Mandatory Volunteering,” employee refuses and gets everyone paid

• One day, at my former employer, my co-worker said, “hey don't forget this Saturday is the mandatory volunteer weekend.” And I'm like, “…what??” She's like, “yeah, everybody has to volunteer for at least eight hours on Saturday and you need to sign up for your shift.” I said, “oh I'm good, I'm not gonna do it."

• She goes, “oh no, you don't get a choice, it's mandatory.” I said, “mandatory volunteering???” She says, "yeah, it's mandatory.

  Like, no it's not. You can't put the word volunteer and mandatory together.

  I said, “I'm not volunteering. I will come and you will pay me. If my employer is telling me I have to be there, I will come and you will pay me.”

  She says, "no it's volunteering, everybody has to volunteer.

• So, we have this back and forth. I will not wrap my head around nonsense like ***king “mandatory volunteering.” They're like, “well, you're gonna get fired if you don't do it. I'm like, ”I bet you I won't." And they're like, “you have to! You can't be this way, you have to!” 

• Then my supervisor was like, “we've been doing this for 20 years, everybody does it, you come and you work your eight hours [for free].”

  What it was, was standing in the road and you wait till they stop at the stoplight and then you go up to all the cars and you ask them for donations. I worked for a non profit. And it was “mandatory volunteering” to do this.

• I happened to be very pregnant at the time and I'm like, “I'm not walking in traffic. I'm not volunteering for this. If this is a mandatory thing I will get paid for this. And they're like, ”no, you won't. And then my boss is like, “I'm gonna tell my boss and she's gonna tell you that you don't get to work here if you don't do this!"

• I was like, that's not gonna happen, that's not gonna happen." 

  And guess what? Every single person got paid for that weekend because you know what? The department of Labour said so.
