  • Executive hires wife for my team without my permission - I might get fired tomorrow for saying mean things to her

  • I look after the marketing team in our company. We had a job opening looking for a video editor that was only open for a week when all of the sudden I get an email from HR congratualing someone for being hired in that role. when I had not met this person.
  • I find out this person is the wife of one of excecutives at my company. She's around 50 & studying her masters on TV production.
  • She will be managed by someone else who I manage but all hires in marketing have gone past me.
  • I don't want to sound entitled or arrogant about being the one who makes the call of who gets hired but I find it ridiculous that someone was hired without even going through a proper interview process.
  • I'm sure boss loves her music

  • I asked HR what the process was like for her, & I just got someone from HR come up to me in person to tell me she was vetted via a "stringent network" but would not send me an email to confirm.
  • To make matters worse, the video editor lady decides to send a video of her "singing" on youtube to everybody in a marketing group chat & that we should include it in our upcoming promo video.
  • She confronted me at lunch about it & I told her that her singing was bad & it sounded like a birds falling down the stairs or that she was trying to sing a curse on someone & she sent a teams group chat with her husband & HR Head complaining about my conduct but also some ridiculous accusations that I was throwing her under the bus about some projects that we were behind on - she's not even on those projects & we did not even talk about that.
  • HR sent an invite for tomorrow & a follow up message that my conduct was unprofessional.
  • I wasn't trying to be insulting...I was just describing her singing. I can see the writing on the wall.
  • And he doesn't like anyone who isn't a fan

  • Is this the end for me?
  • RedSunCinema You done fucked up A-Aron. Never insult or antagonize the wife of an executive at the company you work. While you may be in charge of the marketing team, you are not in charge of the company. And while you may be in charge of vetting potential hires, in this case, you don't always get to make the choices when it comes to an executive hiring their wife to work at the company. People higher up than you vetted her and decided to hire her. What you should have done is join in on the con
  • OP RaspberryNegative490 haha yup
  • teonesofle Youtube video link?
  • OP RaspberryNegative490 im tempted but i shouldn't. her face, name will easily be known from that video. but i also would not wish harm on anyone's ears.
  • solomons-marbles Dude, you're toast. She'll be in your office by the end of the week.
  • OP RaspberryNegative490 yes very likely. someone with no experience in marketing will be running it...i guess if i did it for the last few years, anyone can.
  • HeyT00ts 11 I would have analyzed the lift/results your last five projects have had on money/followers/percentage of something (whatever you measure). Then, when the idea of her singing on the next project comes up, I would have gone along with it. Then, if, as you predict, it had an adverse effect, measure it like the prior projects and include those metrics in a results report for your next meeting with your team/boss. The way you handled it, you'll be the bad guy, no matter whether her ideas
  • OP RaspberryNegative490 I thought about that too - using her singing to get the promo videos to be meme'd on; i.e. get traction because the singing is bad. but id rather be honest than suck up to her as seems to be thing everyone is doing atm. people are cc'ing an assistant video editor on budget-related matters, asking her for advice in meetings on important issues...at least my situation is making people in the office realise they have to suck up to her & not cross her.
  • Plus-Implement She definitely sounds like she is going to be a handful and that there is nepotism involved. On your end, you are too focused on being right, being angry at the nepotism, and as you are losing control, you are reactive and are unable to self regulate (i.e. yelling at an employee). This is a really toxic combination, if you can't exercise diplomacy, your job will be on the line in the near future, I promise you that.
  • OP RaspberryNegative490 yeh you're right. i needed to calm down in that situation.
  • DoyoudotheDew Chances are she was going to take over running marketing any how. I'd let HR know that she requested that her singing video be distributed and that you think it is terrible.
  • OP RaspberryNegative490 I did sat down with two HR people who asked for evidence. I forwarded it to them & they said "oh dear..." & tried their best not to laugh. I forwarded it because they asked for it as evidence not because i was sharing it around. interesting though the video had 10-12 views last week...it now has hundreds but still zero Likes.
  • OkManufacturer767 > I wasn't trying to be insulting. You absolutely were. And you know it, so don't come here acting like you didn't do anything wrong. Nepotism happens. Suck it up buttercup and be civil to your new coworker.
  • OP RaspberryNegative490 ok you must get triggered easily. how do you know i came knowing i did nothing wrong...i genuinely know i did something wrong but at the time, i was describing her singing the way someone tries to describe the sound of something they've never heard before. obviously it was mean as you can tell by the title. my question was "is this the end for me"? NOT "i don't think i did anything wrong, did i?". & the resounding response by most people is that yes...I should be looking
  • Direct Surprise2828 I guess things like diplomacy, tact, sensitivity, discretion are not in your vernacular? OP you might want to get hold of an old book called "how to win friends and influence people". I'll give you credit though. you are ballsy. M
  • Impressive-Visit3354 The fact that you don't think the way you described her singing was unprofessional explains why the company totally circumvented you in the hiring process. I don't think you have the maturity to be a manager. If I was an executive with your company, I don't know if I would fire you, but I would reprimand you for showing a lack of respect for your employees.
  • Emergency_Piece3809 I understand your frustration with the whole situation. The minute you found out you had a new hire that did not go through the proper process, you should have started looking for another job. It only takes one, then the dam breaks and you end with a department full of entitlement. Tred lightly and look for another job!
