Job candidate logs onto Zoom interview early and overhears that an offer has already been made, proceeds to call them out: 'Hey guys, just so you know, I can hear you!'

Imagine preparing for your dream job interview, only for the ground to fall out from under you just before it starts.

Picture this. You've practiced your talking points. You've done all your research. You know how best to position yourself for this role, and you genuinely believe that you are the most qualified candidate.

You log onto the Zoom meeting a few minutes early just to be punctual, and you immediately notice something strange. The hiring manager, whose camera is off, is speaking to her colleague offscreen. She must think she is muted based on the contents of the conversation because very quickly, it becomes clear that they have already made an offer to whomever they interviewed minutes prior. You didn't even get your fair shot.

You try to salvage the situation by messaging in the Zoom meeting that you're logged in and can hear everyone, to no avail. By the time they notice you, it's too late. The hiring manager apologizes profusely, and somehow, the polite part of you musters the willpower to keep going with this pointless interview, despite the fact that you now know the truth.

  • You have to hand it to the interviewee for getting through that experience. Most folks would have given up and logged off. In a sense, the author acknowledged that they knew there was nothing that would convince these folks to change their minds. In fact, they went through with the interview for the practice. However, if for whatever reason these folks did reconsider, we do not suggest that the author work at a company with this kind of messy negligence.
