This is Dwayne, he first appeared in March 2023. We didnt know at the time that he didnt have a home, we just assumed based on his breed and unusual colour, that maybe someone new had moved into the area.

He always seemed well fed and then we started noticing on a local Facebook group several neighbours asking who owned him. No-one ever claimed him but maybe they weren't on Facebook or didnt use social media. My guess is that he a had a few people feeding him.

In the summer of 2024 we didnt see him at all, and then one day towards the end of August he turned up with one of our cats by our back window looking really skinny. He was always a fairly big lad and it was clear he hadn't eaten properly in a long time. We started feeding him and started to get him to trust us.

Several months later when he was comfortable coming into our place, we were able to get someone to come over to scan him and see if he was chipped. Turns out he wasnt. When he was even more comfortable with us, and practically living with us, I got a collar and a tag with my number on it to see once and for all if he really did have an owner.

knittedmerkin Such a handsome and distinguished gentleman. Boop that tiny nose for me!

ianmorris1981 OP We were told he is a bristish short hair cat but some have said he might have a bit of Persian in him, especially when you look at his little squashed nose. I remember one person saying that some breeders will use certain Persians to breed with BSH and somehow with that combo you can end up with a chocolate coloured cat.

ultraplasm Oh my gosh! What a ridiculously handsome cat! How the heck can anyone ever abandon a pet? Well, regardless...he's obviously better off now with you. You guys were destined for each other!

ianmorris1981 OP I posted him a while back on notmycat and a few people came up with a theory that im reasonably sure is probably what happened.
  • 12
They said that he was probably owned by a dodgy breeder, and that he wasnt getting the job done. He wasnt neutered or chipped and they said that a proper breeder would a)probably not let him roam freely and b) would definitely have him chipped in case he got out.

We had an unspayed female cat when he first appeared and when he showed up we were quite keen for her to have kittens with him. She did end up having a few litters but they clearly weren't Dwaynes. There was another tom cat in the area (a big fluffy tabby) and all kittens ended up being big fluffy tabbys.

When we got him neutered, the vet informed us that they discovered that he had an undecsended testicle. Although that wouldn't make him infertile, it would significantly reduce his chances of successfully breeding.

After hearing that from the vet, plus the original theory and the fact he had a load of chances with our female cat but no kittens from him, it all just adds up. Breeder didnt have any need for him because he isnt getting any of their cats pregnant, he is just costing them money in food. He was fully grown so unlikely to be able to sell him so just abandon him somewhere.

LuvFuzzball I've never seen a chocolate colored cat before, this guy is beautiful!

ianmorris1981 OP Yeah I'd never seen that colour on a cat before either. Didn't even know they came in that colour. We were blown away when he first appeared, even was a bit jealous of whoever his owners were (completely unaware at the time that he didn't have an owner). I think thats what took us so long before we started taking care of him, just assumed there was no way someone would abandon him.

AltruisticExit2366 Oh he's so unusual looking!! I've never seen a brown cat. He looks so handsome and formidable! Looks like a tough guy but is made of gooey chocolate on the inside. I'm So glad you were able to give him a home.

ianmorris1981 OP He is a big gentle giant. Considering we dont know how old he is or what his background is, he is incredibly friendly and really good with our 2 kids. It's almost like he knows he was a stray and is just really grateful to now have a home and loads of attention.

ianmorris1981 OP We used to just refer to him as Brown Cat, that was his name until we started looking after him. I said we cant keep calling him brown cat and my daughter, who was big into watching the 2 new Jumanji movies, said he reminded her of Dwayne The Rock Johnson.
