'My cat is really obsessed with potatoes': Feline pawrent takes to the forums to find help for her hissterically potato-possessed cat, she finds out it's more common than you think

One of the reasons why we love our cats so much is because they are so weird. On the outside, they look like fluffy little angels, you would never guess that one of them will spend hours sticking her face in our shoes, and falling asleep with her head inside. What a lovable little weirdo! The other is slightly less strange, but he does fall asleep in some truly ridiculous pawsitions. But if you thought our cats were weird, just wait until you read what this pawrent below is going through.

Her cat has a strange obsession with the apple of the earth, that silly spud we all know and love: potatoes. He's entranced by them, and will break into any cabinet containing potatoes. Not knowing what to do with her feisty feline child, she took to the internet and asked the helpful cat community what to do about it. Their answer? It's not as strange as it sounds.

Many pawrents stepped forward and said that their cat, too, had a cat that was once passionate for potatoes. They usually grow out of it, but suggested childproof locks or even going as far as storing the spuds in the microwave or oven.   • Our cat has a sixth sense for finding paper clips. We don't even own any paper clips (who owns paper clips anymore?), and yet, she will still find them. Maybe she has access to some portal that leads to an office somewhere because we can't think of any other logical solution.

    He will do anything to get to them and broke baby locks by chewing them out. This wouldn't really be a problem if he'd stop trying to eat/bite them.

    alewifePete 17h ago . I had one that would do this with bananas. Eventually I put in baby locks. Two days after I put those in I came home to all of my canned goods spread across the kitchen. That was the only cabinet without a lock and he was showing his annoyance. I really miss that cat.

  • We're sure that this is a very trouble problem for this pawrent, but we also can't help but laugh. It's truly ridiculous the things our cat children get up to. You can never truly predict what they'll get attached to, or why.

    one) so I could protect the others. As long as he had his potato, he'd leave mine be. I still had to change his out every week or so, but the sacrificial offering persuaded him to let the rest of the horde live. He eventually outgrew it, and I honestly sort of miss the hilarity of it all.

    mysillyyum 17h ago Hey, just want to throw a bit of caution. Raw potatoes have solanine. Quantity matters, but can be toxic to cats. I think the biggest worry is if he's really trying to munch them down, but toss all the ones that have any of that that green to them because that means they are really holding that solanine.

Once the food was returned (and a new bag purchased somewhere else... apparently the organic grocery was phasing out pet foods), problem solved.

    I second magnetic baby locks on a cabinet if you need them (I don't advocate storing potatoes in a sealed container). But don't lose the magnet you use to open it... because those things WORK. Astonishingly well.

    If I ever have a dum dum now I literally quietly unwrap it and have to pull a blanket up over my nose to eat it. If he finds out, it's over bc he will not stop trying to steal it from me until I just throw away the sucker.

    to open every cabinet, drawer, door, ANYTHING until he found them and had actually just himself trying to find them a few times. So if he wants to investigate I can open the cabinets, closet doors, pantry lol anywhere he wants to look so he doesn't hurt himself trying to open them himself

    BoneCode 16h ago . My cat used to love potatoes too. She just loved hunting them. Then she'd carry them around and hide them places. So you'd go to put on your shoes and there'd be random potatoes in there.

    She grew out of it eventually. Moved on to other obsessions once the novelty wore off. So my suggestion would be to let her play with the potatoes and check your shoes.
