How do I stop my cat‘s potato addiction?

Cat staring at potatoes including 'He has a sixth sense just for locating potatoes'
  • 02
I know this might sound a bit weird, but my cat is really obsessed with potatoes.
  • 03
When he knows there are potatoes in the house he opens doors and cabinets to get to them. It's like he has a sixth sense just for locating potatoes.
  • 04
He will do anything to get to them and broke baby locks by chewing them out. This wouldn't really be a problem if he'd stop trying to eat/bite them.
  • 05
Is there anything I can do to stop his obsession or am I never allowed to eat potatoes again? :(

TryingNotToGoCrazy48 18h ago What about magnetic baby locks? They go on the inside of the cabinet door, and you wave a magnet in front of the cabinet to unlock it Unless you cat has thumbs or is freakishly smart, he won't be able to break in

alewifePete 17h ago . I had one that would do this with bananas. Eventually I put in baby locks. Two days after I put those in I came home to all of my canned goods spread across the kitchen. That was the only cabinet without a lock and he was showing his annoyance. I really miss that cat.

PlantAndMetal 17h ago Lol, I'm envisioning a cat attacking potatoes and shredding it to pieces, like my cat does with paper boxes. I have to laugh sorry what cats can get obsessed with....

IndependentFilm4353 • 16h ago . My cat went through this in his velociraptor stage (6 months - 2 years or so). He would carry his potato around, bat it from room to room, nap with it, etc.. I sort of surrendered and made sure he always had a potato (just

one) so I could protect the others. As long as he had his potato, he'd leave mine be. I still had to change his out every week or so, but the sacrificial offering persuaded him to let the rest of the horde live. He eventually outgrew it, and I honestly sort of miss the hilarity of it all.

hsavvy 18h ago • Store them in a Rubbermaid container that has those thick snap closures. Or store them in like, the oven lol

mysillyyum 17h ago Hey, just want to throw a bit of caution. Raw potatoes have solanine. Quantity matters, but can be toxic to cats. I think the biggest worry is if he's really trying to munch them down, but toss all the ones that have any of that that green to them because that means they are really holding that solanine.

A friend of mine had to take her kitty to the emergency vet because he ate a big chunk of one. Cooked is OK!

terrible-gator22 • 17h ago You might consider just purchasing the amount of potatoes that you need. immediately and not storing them. A little less convenient, but I don't like wrangling with obsessed cats, myself.

Lower_Rate_8518 · 17h ago I had a cat once break into my potato bag... but that was when her food I bought at the grocery actually had an expired date. Once the food was returned (and a new bag purchased somewhere else... apparently the organic grocery was phasing out pet foods), problem solved.

I second magnetic baby locks on a cabinet if you need them (I don't advocate storing potatoes in a sealed container). But don't lose the magnet you use to open it... because those things WORK. Astonishingly well.

SushiandSyrup • 17h ago I'm crying ••• bc this is my cat but with dum dum suckers, I was craving them and bought a bag years ago and he just loves them (???) like I fist found out when I had woken up to an open pantry
  • 22
and dum dums all over the floor with the wrapper taken off and the suckers bit in to. So to have a cat go absolutely wild over the most bizarre thing is something I can relate to
  • 23
If I ever have a dum dum now I literally quietly unwrap it and have to pull a blanket up over my nose to eat it. If he finds out, it's over bc he will not stop trying to steal it from me until I just throw away the sucker.

For storage- my safe places are the fridge and the microwave also putting them into an unrecognizable bag or container can help. Prior to finding these safe places he would literally go crazy and try
  • 25
to open every cabinet, drawer, door, ANYTHING until he found them and had actually just himself trying to find them a few times. So if he wants to investigate I can open the cabinets, closet doors, pantry lol anywhere he wants to look so he doesn't hurt himself trying to open them himself

Craftnerd24 • 17h ago My cat is obsessed with strawberries...but I do know that he was born in a garden, so I assume they smell like home.

BoneCode 16h ago . My cat used to love potatoes too. She just loved hunting them. Then she'd carry them around and hide them places. So you'd go to put on your shoes and there'd be random potatoes in there.
  • 28
She grew out of it eventually. Moved on to other obsessions once the novelty wore off. So my suggestion would be to let her play with the potatoes and check your shoes.
