  • "AITJ for refusing to buy my cousin a baby shower gift after she immediately sold everything I gave her"

I'm a single mom making about $45k a year. Live paycheck to paycheck. My cousin is pregnant with twins. She makes over $70k plus military benefits. Her husband works full time.
  • They own a home and just bought a new car. They're financially comfortable. Last weekend I gave her over $2,000 worth of baby stuff from my 17-month-old
  • daughter. Baby Brezza, car seat with base, clothes, bottles, toys, bath seats, everything. Ten huge bags and boxes.
  • Pregnant woman opening gifts from her family members at the baby shower.
  • When she picked it up she made negative comments about most of it but took everything anyway. Made a rude comment about the Brezza and formula feeding parents specifically.
  • Five hours later almost everything was posted for sale on our local Facebook marketplace. She sold it all within hours. Got at least $300 based on her listing prices.
  • I'm devastated. I was planning to put together a $300 postpartum care package for her baby shower. But she clearly just wanted to flip my stuff for cash.
  • These items had memories attached. It was hard for me to give them away. I thought she'd actually use them for her twins.
  • Now her shower is next month and I don't want to buy her anything. If she's just going to sell whatever I give her what's the point.
  • Her mom texted saying I'm being petty and she's pregnant with twins and needs all the help she can get. That I'm making this about me when it should be about supporting her.
  • But I feel used. She makes way more than me and sold my stuff for profit. AITJ for not wanting to buy her a shower gift?

  • youknowimright25 Why do you need to buy get another gift of you have her $2000 worth of gifts already? Tell her that was what she got.
  • Ancient-Studio6819 NTJ. She didn't need those items. She wanted to profit off you. You're barely scraping by and gave her thousands of dollars worth of baby gear from your own child. She immediately sold it all for cash despite making twice what you earn. That's not being family. That's taking advantage. You don't owe her anything especially not another $300 when she clearly doesn't value your generosity.
  • Flat Criticism6440 Being family makes what she did worse. I would not go to the baby shower, let alone get her anything else. They obviously look at it as a money grab, because it's expected for people to get them something. Careful of the pressure they put on you and avoid the topic when possible. At the most, just get them a small package of diapers, just so they can't say you didn't get anything (though they probably will anyway). Good luck dealing with them.
  • qwrsr NTJ. She clearly does not deserve any other gift you give her when she made rude comments about the last one and then sold it all.
  • Tess47 Personally, I would go to the shower without a new gift. If anyone asks tell them you gave a very generous gift already. Then eat and drink a lot. Make sure to leave before clean up.
