An office job undergoes a sudden shift for the worse when management decides employees must be eternally available for non-urgent requests without pay, turning weekends into unpaid consultation hours nobody signed up for.  

What started as a normal clock-in-clock-out situation morphed into a lifestyle brand where personal time became company property. No contract change, no bonus, no actual emergencies, just vibes and entitlement dressed up as workplace culture. Management discovered they could text employees during family dinners and call it teamwork. Missing a Saturday message now counts as corporate betrayal, even though the thing needing attention could marinate until Tuesday without consequence. The beautiful irony lives in the meeting about responsiveness trends, as if attendance to imaginary crises deserves performance reviews.  

Companies love inventing obligations that cost them nothing. Calling it reachability instead of on-call means dodging compensation while harvesting free labor from guilt and fear. It is capitalism at its most efficient, getting workers to donate their lives without ever asking directly. The job wants total access but offers partial respect. Every text becomes a test of loyalty to a place that would replace anyone in a standard two-week window.

  • It seems like somewhere along the way, some businesses convinced themselves that salaried employees are actually subscriptions with unlimited usage. But these employees know being paid for 40 hours but expected to live for 168 is not a job requirement, it is just polite theft with a staff handbook.

  • Sesoru If you aren't being paid salary then you don't need to do anything outside the hours you paid. It does not matter what they say. If they try and push it, call the labor board and force an investigation. It may take months for that to process, but they'll get in trouble hopefully when labor board does their stuff.

  • lamdacore-2020 Does your contract clearly stipulate your working hours and the hours you are to work per week? Does it have provisions for changes your company is now trying to enforce? There could be a disconnect between your manager and HR here. If there is no such thing then you can tell them you are not contractually obligated to do so. And "quick favour" by definition is just that...they are favours that if done then great else it should not be a metric of measurement of your performance. K
