Clueless 50-year-old man tries to renew passport at the DMV with no ID or documentation: 'I actually don't have my wallet with me'

This man was not the brightest bulb at the DMV that afternoon.

Not only did he wait in that interminably long line for a doomed walk-in appointment, but he was also trying to renew his passport without having any of the documentation necessary to do so.

Look, we appreciate the fact that so many elements of bureaucratic processes that require a visit to the Department of Motor Vehicles are over-the-top. Even if you were to do everything right and procure all the required forms of identification in advance of a scheduled appointment, you will still inevitably question the necessity of the process. Why does it have to be this way? Why do I have to wait in this line? Shouldn't I already be in the system, whatever that is?

In that sense, I empathize with this man's plight. I also understand that sometimes you have to make a naive mistake in order to know better next time. On the other hand, this is a fully grown individual who is now in his fifties. Surely, he had to make a trip to the DMV at some other point in his adult life, and surely he knew that no matter what you're trying to do there, it's a process. Shouldn't he know better by now?

Unfortunately for everyone in the line behind him and for the poor employee who had to explain everything like he was 5 and not 50, he did not know better…

Thankfully, it seems like this man was in a jovial enough mood to understand his errors and vow to come in another time once he gathers all the correct information. Most other people in this position would refuse to accept their own culpability in the matter and would proceed to throw a gigantic fit over the fact that they can't get their passport renewed in that very moment. Most people would make it seem like the DMV employee is at fault for not being helpful. As much as we like to claim that the DMV is the most miserable place on earth, the truth of the matter is that some folks do have some agency in making their own experiences there slightly more bearable.
