  • Got dream job, a month in and got laid off

Woman covers her face while packing belongings into a box at her office workspace.
  • I got laid off recently and need some advice! Started a position at my dream job on December 2nd and was still in my probation period.
  • I loved it, especially since it aligns with my future career, fits my schedule perfectly, has great pay, and offers work-life balance.
  • I made sure to come in early, perform all tasks correctly, ask questions when needed, and I had been told multiple times I was doing a good job.
  • I'm also very quiet at work and careful to avoid mistakes because of anxiety. Today, about five minutes before lunch, I noticed I had been signed out of all my accounts one by one, and my password no longer worked.
  • Manager points while standing over an employee holding paperwork at her desk, suggesting a possible termination or disciplinary meeting.
  • A woman I had never met before (later learned she's my supervisor's boss) came to my cubicle and asked me to come to my supervisor's office.
  • Once inside, she sat down while another higher-up just sat in the corner looking upset, with red eyes, possibly crying.
  • The woman didn't even offer me a seat. The second I closed the door, she said with a bright smile, "I don't think you're a good fit," followed by, "You're just not working with us," and, "I would like for you to hand me your badge." I honestly thought I was dreaming or daydreaming literally a nightmare coming to life.
  • When I asked for a reason, she said, "Yeah, no, sorry, I can't tell you the reason why," then added, "Actually, you can pack up right now and leave." There were no warnings, no performance issues, nothing.
  • I couldn't even get myself to speak after leaving the office because I was in so much shock, felt like a tiny rock in my throat.
  • Frustrated office employee sits at a desk with her head in her hand, showing visible stress and dissatisfaction during a difficult work situation.
  • I would at least still be getting paid for the remainder of today, with my paycheck deposit tomorrow, but I'm still trying to process this.
  • I'd like to know: is this a typical probationary dismissal? Should I apply for unemployment even though I was only there a month?
  • And how should I explain this to future employers? I had also planned to get a used car tomorrow, but now I'm unsure since this happened suddenly and I wasn't prepared, I don't know what to do.
  • I don't know if this is an ADHD thing, but at first, I wanted to cry, and then 20 minutes later, I just became numb.
  • cjroxs Make sure you write a Glassdoor review about your experience so others know what this company is all about.
  • OP IloveRamonhehe Oh definitely!! And adding it to my new-years resolution: warn as much people as possible on the reviews, lol.
  • dopeless-hope-addict That is untypical. Most likely has nothing to do with your performance. If it was performance related and they really did not say anything at all, then they are horrible management. I've canned people during probation but there were multiple one on ones, some involving my boss as well. When I let the person go they didn't even care and said they new it was coming. It was bizarre. That sucks. You will recover and land something else. Hopefully the next role is kinder to you.
  • OP IloveRamonhehe Thank you, and yeah the way they did it is super off-putting too. My boss always compliments my work, co-workers are nice, met 1 hire up who loved me..and then my supervisors boss who I have never interacted before until now decides to let me go?
  • NtheLegend It sounds like you were fired, not laid off. Still, the situation sucks!
  • OP IloveRamonhehe yeah, would never seen it coming especially since I was told everyday Im doing "great". Also, sorry forgot to mention, I'm in Florida, which is an at-will employment state. Especially during probation, they can let you go for any reason-or no reason at all-sometimes even for budget cuts or just dont like the way you perform ②.
  • whatever32657 every state is an at-will employment state - except montana. it's happened to way too many of us. i'm sorry.
  • OP IloveRamonhehe ooh okay, thank you!! (:
  • roguepen Had that happen at a job last year. Ironically I decided to look for a new job while I was on vacation the week before. They handed me my papers, which was a list of their apparent complaints that they had never spoken to me about. I didn't read it. Just laughed my way out of the office afterwards. Knew the place was a show about a month in. Found out later I was the first of many to be let go due to downsizing and other things. Had a nice coffee when I got back to town and had at least
  • OP lloveRamonhehe Thats great, and late congrats on getting a new better job!! Im happy everything worked out for you (:
  • EssentiaLillie It feels like the woman who fired you was enjoying this. Like, she could have fired you without being a total asshole. Since you did not know her, and there was another higher-up in the corner possibly crying, (and this is just my conspiracy theory), it is possible that you were just caught in cross-fire in some company political war that you do not know of. And you do not need to put this experience in your resume at all. It was less than a month long and adds nothing good to you
  • OP IloveRamonhehe okay and thank you for the advice will definitely do it that way! As for the women she did look like she was enjoying it. She was smiling ear-to-ear, sounded like she was giving out good news- which is why I thought I misheard her the first time
  • marrhi I'm so sorry this happened. It's incredibly frustrating when you do everything right and still get hit with a "not a fit" excuse. Based on how you described the office vibe and the higher-up looking upset, this sounds way more like a budget cut or a company-wide layoff than anything you actually did wrong.
  • OP IloveRamonhehe Im kinda thinking thats why too , when I did walk out of her office it was already lunch and my co-worker noticed (desk in- front of office), seen me visibly shaking, because it was so unexpected, she comfort me a bit before I had to leave and expressed how that doesn't make any sense since we all do the same task and everyone loves my work, and also thought maybe It could be budget cuts
  • kitten_huddle I'm so, so sorry. That is devastating.
  • OP IloveRamonhehe thanks and Im trying to think positive during this H. Maybe it was a sign, maybe it just wasn't meant to be, or maybe that job is toxic and Im lucky to be out, wish i would've known earlier tho lol.
  • fake-august That happened to me - my supervisor came in with HR to my office and said they were letting me go (it was for a big yacht dealership in 2008 people weren't buying many yachts). My supervisor ran out of my office crying she seemed more upset than I was. We are still friends :) It sucks and you may never understand why - probably budget-wise because it sounds like you were doing fine. File for unemployment and move on...it sucks but it happens to almost everyone.
  • OP IloveRamonhehe wow nobody deserves to go through this or feel this way, we should all be promised with job stability. Sorry you went through this and Im glad you're doing fine now!!
  • Spiritual-Soup2551 I'm very sorry to hear that happened to you! That's why I don't understand people who feel compelled to give their company a 2-week or more notice!
  • OP lloveRamonhehe thank you and its okay maybe this was a sign? And yep! I now understand why people dont give 2 week notice to some companies. These companies are evil
