In this instance, new management did not understand the value of the consultant that the company had been using for years. This went so far that the boss refused to compensate the consultant for the hours of work he put into a new project. After attempting to explain why this project took as many hours as it did, the new boss still proved unable to comprehend the purpose of the consultant's work.
So, the consultant decided to prove his value in a different way. He ended up revoking an important license that the company needed in order to function properly. By disrespecting the consultant, this new boss vastly underestimated his contributions to the business. Let's just say he paid the price.
