Boss begs for former employee to come back after entire department falls apart, employee considers his options: 'My salary increased by 120%!'

How much of a salary increase would you accept in order to return to your least favorite job?

Everyone's answer to this question is subjective. After all, it depends on how terrible the employment experience was. Still, even if you swore that you would never work with a certain boss or company again under any circumstances, it's possible that a specific number crossed your mind.

I'll never forget the advice a former professor once told me about the criteria for any employment opportunity. I also know that many adults have been given a similar version of guidance. Still, regardless of how radical or commonplace these words of advice are, I believe that they are useful and applicable to most situations.

At the end of the day, there should be three central categories of importance: the job itself, the people, and the money. Depending on your needs, you should be able to check at least two of those three boxes. If the people are kind and the work is fulfilling, maybe you'll be ok accepting subpar pay (for now). Of course, certain categories may be of more significance to some folks. If salary is far and away the most important category, as it is for many workers, perhaps having that example is not satisfactory enough.

This author thought he had gotten rid of this company after he left the business eight months ago. The people were unkind, the work was unfulfilling, and the pay was bad. He thought he managed to get out without burning any bridges. He even thought they would be fine without him… until his boss came back into his life.

It turns out that in the ensuing months following the author's departure from the company, his entire former department fell to pieces. The author's boss practically begged to have him back at the salary he deserved to have back in the day. The problem was that even if the money was satisfactory, the people and the work itself still weren't.
Furthermore, the author's new employment arrangement checked off more boxes according to that categorization, which made it much harder to accept his ex-boss's so-called “generous” offer.
