Job candidate notices entitled CEO reposting the same position on a job board during his interview: 'We were literally still on the call together!'

This CEO decided in the moment that the candidate with whom he was speaking was not the right fit. This, of course, is common, but the way the CEO handled it was unprofessional, to say the least.

It takes a lot of guts and resolve to prepare for an in-depth interview to work for a CEO. By that point, you presumably have surpassed several rounds of interviews for the position already. You have probably done a considerable amount of research into the company. You also likely completed assessments or shared materials that prove you are a viable candidate. It takes a ton of effort and work to get that far into a job search process.

So when you finally get to have the opportunity to speak to a CEO about why you are the right fit for a given position, you probably are expecting to be given a fair shot. Unfortunately for this author, the CEO seemingly decided halfway into the interview that he wasn't good enough. However, he couldn't have bothered to wait until the end of the meeting to start looking elsewhere. Instead, he started to continue his search… during said interview.

  • What this CEO underestimated was his lack of subtlety during the interview. The author immediately noticed that the person with whom he was speaking was looking elsewhere, either down at his phone or on another device. That's not a hard visual to pick up on in this day and age. Yet somehow, this dude thought he was able to get away with researching other potential candidates during his interview with the author.

    However, it gets worse. The author also happened to be the monitor of an online job posting group. While the CEO was conducting this interview, he tried to repost the description for the same position on various job boards, including the same one that the candidate managed. Awkward!

    Anyway, I had a third interview last week for a job I was very optimistic about. It was with the company's CEO. He joined the video call 15 minutes late, which was a bit of a red flag, but he apologized after I messaged his assistant, so I decided to let it go.
