When the author brought her list of grievances to HR, the subsequent consequences could have gone in several different directions. We have all likely witnessed scenarios in which employees had hoped that HR would have their back, only to be blindsided and disappointed. In this case, however, the employee’s documentation was so thorough and so clearly unfair that HR had no choice but to side with the author over her boss.
If there is any major takeaway from the employee’s win here, it’s that you never know the true value in carefully monitoring the communication you have with your manager. You simply don’t know how that record could benefit you in the end, or even help you keep your job.
Perhaps not every HR department will be as reasonable as the representative in this anecdote. Still, when we see employees gain major wins over the tyrannical forces that seek to undermine them at work, we have to applaud their resolve and live vicariously through that success.
