Parents don't technically have to house, clothe, and feed their children when they turn 18. Once you're a legal adult, you can make your own choices and go out on your own, but most 18-year-olds don't choose to leave home the second they turn 18 unless there is something really wrong. They're much more likely to go home after graduating from high school to pursue higher education or a career. There's this weird transient stage between childhood and adulthood where you're technically an adult on paper, but you're still living under your parents' roof and fulfilling the social role of a child in school. There's nothing wrong with living under your parents' rules when you're still in high school. Most parents don't kick their kid out as soon as they turn 18 without prior notice unless there's something seriously wrong with them.

Many parents feel guilty about feeling relieved when their adult children leave home, but it's not a crime to feel that way. There's a whole new stage of life for parents to explore once they become empty nesters, and it's healthy for both parent and child to be excited about their newfound independence from each other. Parents usually don't feel excited about their kids leaving home if they're worried about their ability to take care of themselves. If they know that their kid is safe, happy, and having a blast at Texas Tech University, they might feel more inclined to enjoy the depth and breadth of empty-nest life than if they're worried about whether they can afford to pay their rent.

The mom in this story is not a typical mom. She's fully willing to kick her son out the moment he turns 18 because she wants a new life with her boyfriend. She clearly views her son as a burden that she's thrilled to get rid of, and her words are heartbreaking to read.
