Entitled mother-in-law demands son and daughter-in-law drive 6 hours with their newborn for an unplanned family vacation: 'I will not be going!'

In-laws can be hard to reason with, but if you don't establish boundaries from the get-go, things will only get worse.

This entitled mother-in-law had a habit of organizing family vacations and get-togethers without checking everyone else's schedules first. She would literally pick a weekend that worked for her wide-open schedule, book hotels and everything, and then send the information to the rest of her family as if they had no say in the matter. At first, it was easier for her adult kids and their partners to accept this behavior and adjust their schedules accordingly in order to appease their matriarch. However, once they started having children themselves, traveling with little notice or consideration for their work schedules became an issue that could no longer be ignored.

This story was written from the perspective of the daughter-in-law, who had a newborn baby. Suddenly, her mother-in-law sent them an email without warning one day, announcing the logistics of their next vacation. The trip was already planned, and the hotels were already booked… once again, with zero input from other family members. Furthermore, the location of said hotel was a short trip distance-wise for the mother-in-law, but a six-hour trip for the daughter-in-law, her husband, and their six-month-old child. Talk about careless and insensitive!

The most upsetting part of this story has got to be the fact that the daughter-in-law's husband did not seem to understand her perspective at all. Sure, we appreciate a son who wants to make his older mother happy, but refusing to take his wife's point of view into account is unacceptable. This is especially true when you consider just how strenuous the trip would be for them and their kid.
Why couldn't the mother-in-law come to them if she wanted a get-together so badly? Why couldn't she check in and see when they think a trip like this would be doable for their family? The answer is two-fold. On the one hand, it's the mother-in-law's fault for failing to consider everyone else's schedules. On the other hand, the author's husband and sibling are to be blamed for essentially giving her permission to behave this way. It's time to put an end to this lady's main character syndrome!
