Uncle uses AI to edit wedding pictures, loses the originals, and leaves the newlyweds with artificial‑looking images instead of memories: ‘The groom's face didn't even look like him anymore’

  • Photographer touched up all images with AI, lost the original copies

At my sister's wedding (male of honor here), one of the groom's uncles offered to handle the pictures.
  • I know, I know, but in our defense the man used to be a big sports photographer, so we knew he had the talent.
  • He's an older man that is a bit... eccentric. Throughout the event, he would take photos with a very nice camera, and go through the usual wedding photo lineups, so we assumed everything was going smoothly.
  • Throughout the ceremony and reception, he would constantly mispronounce my sister's name (like Meghan vs Meegun), which was already frustrating enough.

  • Other than that, the event went off without a hitch. Everything seemed good. Later, we get the pictures back from him, and oh lord...
  • Each photo is heavily touched up by Al, to the point of them looking like Al generated images.
  • The groom's face didnt even look like him anymore. The bride was pissed, and so was everyone else to be honest.
  • We contacted him in hopes that he had the original photos. He said he did it because the lighting was bad, but im not terrible at photo editing, and anything is better than Al slop.
  • Nope, he doesnt have them. I guess he overwrote them with this ai shit. Thankfully, some guests took their own photos, so we were able to ask them for their pictures in an effort to fill the wedding album somehow.

  • Let's just say we are never trusting him for anything important anymore. Biggest regret as the MOH.
  • Some of them are so smooth they look like a painting. No sane person would want them staining their walls or wedding albums.
  • UmThatsWhat|Thought2 This is terrible and has several mistakes in it that he made, but I do want to clarify something for you. Just last week, I was editing a batch of photos that had considerable "noise." I used Denoise in Photoshop per usual, but the subjects turned out looking like Al creatures. I really had to dig to find the old school denoiser option that doesn't use A.I. Again, that doesn't dismiss the many errors he made and your resulting loss. But, he may not have purposely meant to ma
  • nomoreinternetforme Original Poster's Reply Honestly we wouldn't have minded the touch up if it was subtle. These were at a level that the groom's face could have passed for a stranger.
  • nomoreinternetforme Original Poster's Reply We straight up had no budget for photographer. We couldn't afford it along with the rest of the ceremony (it was a wedding in home, thats how tight it was.) There was no way we were getting a photographer, so it was a god send when he offered to do it (hell send, now we know) If he hadnt offered, I probably would have just taken photos myself. It wouldn't be fancy or amazing, but it also wouldn't be Al. When he offered, I assumed he had more talent and
  • EyesofRiverGreen Sounds like it's time to seek an attorney.
  • nomoreinternetforme Original Poster's Reply It wasnt paid, he offered to do it for free. That should have been our first warning, but it was a very budget tight wedding.
  • lamchefCJ I had this happen pre-Al. My kid's senior pictures--the photographer, who did at least half of the senior pix in our area, had just gotten Photoshop (this was over 20 years ago). When he gave me the pix, I said, "Wow, the film processing company did a terrible job of editing these!" That's when I learned that these were digital shots that he'd tried to edit himself. My kid's nose was missing in one photo! His teeth ran together into one long uni-tooth in another! I was honked off, tbh.
  • FiveHoursAhead Does anyone have any suggestions on how to discuss this topic with photographers? My fiance and I are just starting the planning process and I've seen a lot of Al photo editing horror stories on this and other subs. I know contracts are usually involved, is there a way for us to put in our own contract/stipulations that Al is not to be used under any circumstances?
  • Beginning_Bug4356 That is terrible. I would be fuming.
  • VivianDiane He didn't just ruin the photos; he destroyed a one-time event's memories. That's permanent. Your regret is valid, his excuse is trash.
  • sonal1988 Wow
  • the-last-aiel Ai isn't ready to think for you, folks
  • RobynNeonGal Let's hope this isn't a new fad.
