Boss preaches family values, then rejects an employee's PTO to attend a relative's wedding, so when the boss begs them take on 2x the workload, the employee refuses: ‘My loyalty is officially at zero'

If management chants, "We are a family," at every work-funded pizza party, you've got yourself a delusional workplace. 

Perhaps the modern collective workforce has forgotten what the word "family" actually means, but to most employees, that roughly translates to the relationship you have with your parents, siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles, lifelong friends, and maybe (just maybe) your pets. Very rarely do coworkers earn the title of "family," especially when they're the suited, C-level, CEO-coded wingnuts spearheading the quarterly KPI requirements that everyone's stressing about. With your livelihood in their hands and shareholders breathing down their necks, it's hard to look at management as an equal human being, let alone a beloved member of your chosen family. 

This boss was obsessed with the idea of team building, mantra chanting, Zoom activities, and company-wide socializing, hoping to forge long-lasting relationships with his employees in the process. However, when his actions didn't align with the wholesome Hobby Lobby signs in their open-door office, the workers in this department began to feel their loyalty slip. Why would you devote any shred of your loyalty to a freshly pressed suit that would sign away your job to an unpaid intern in a heartbeat? 

Because when you say you're all one big happy family in the workplace, it doesn't actually mean anything. Actions speak louder than pizza parties…

    Yup, this is me and my coworker, Murphy. I work from home, so my coworker list is pretty much limited to my literal family (and dog), yet I still cringe whenever I hear about stories where coworkers, managers, or bosses claim the same bond. While I enjoy my coworkers and, in the past, have forged some unbreakable friendships with office mates, a workplace relationship will never carry the same weight as a family member. 

    Sorry, boss, but just because you call your employees in the workplace your "family" doesn't mean you'll fill the gap in your heart where your real relatives should reside.

    Frankly, if a CEO-brained boss starts preaching, saying "We are a family" at every pizza party, prepare to be inundated with double the workload, a pathetic raise, and expect your PTO to be denied for your sister's wedding. Because to him, your family's monumental celebration dates are far less important than quarterly KPI's and revenue generation.

  • It's 3 AM, and I'm wide awake, shaking with pure rage. My company spent the last year shoving the "We are a family" culture down our throats. We've had the pizza parties, the team- building Zoom calls, and the constant reminders that we're all in this together.

  • FINAL UPDATE: I said NO to the 30% Raise trap. I had the talk. My manager finally admitted my teammate is leaving, then went full gaslight mode. He started crying about bad revenue and cash flow,
