  • "AITA for changing the locks after my MIL broke her lease to move into MY inherited house, slept in my bed, boxed my clothes, and my husband said I'd 'come around'?"

My mother in law was asleep in my bed wearing my nightgown when I walked into my bedroom.
  • Not the guest bed. Mine. And she'd thrown half my clothes into boxes in the garage.
  • There was a note on the kitchen counter in her handwriting that said "Finally getting this house organized properly!" I woke her up and she acted like I was being rude.
  • Said "your husband gave me a key months ago, I can come here whenever I want." I told her to get out of my house.
  • She laughed in my face and said "this is my son's house and he'd never choose you over me." My husband was still unloading the car from our trip.
  • When I dragged him inside he looked uncomfortable but not surprised. Turns out he gave her a key six months ago for "emergencies" and she'd been letting herself in while we were at work.
  • Going through our mail. Rearranging stuff. She decided our vacation was her chance to just move in.
  • I asked him straight up, did you know she was planning this. He wouldn't look at me.
  • I gave her two hours to pack her shit and leave. She refused. Said she already broke her apartment lease and had nowhere to go.
  • My husband mumbled something about how we should all calm down and figure this out. I told him right then, choose.

  • Me or her. He said I was being dramatic and his mom was going through a hard time financially.
  • I said that's not my problem when she literally stole my bed and boxed up my stuff without asking.
  • She got in my face. Called me a selfish brat who doesn't understand family. Said she raised her son better than to abandon his mother for "some woman." He just stood there saying nothing.
  • I grabbed my purse and left. Stayed at my friend's place. Next morning I called a locksmith and had every single lock changed while she was at church.
  • I knew she went to the 10am service every Sunday so I had three hours. Piled all her crap on the front porch.
  • Changed the garage code too. My husband was at the gym and started blowing up my phone when he couldn't get inside.
  • I told him to come get his mother's stuff and figure out where they're both staying because neither of them are coming back in.
  • He showed up with her an hour later. She was screaming on my lawn about how I can't do this, threatening to call the cops.
  • I said go ahead. The house is in my name only. I inherited it from my grandfather.
  • She has zero legal right to be here. Police came. Told her she was trespassing and I had every right to keep her out.

  • She cried and said she's homeless now. The officer suggested a shelter. She completely lost it.
  • My husband tried guilting me. Said I'm cruel and heartless. I reminded him he let his mother move into our house without telling me, sleep in our bed, and go through our personal stuff.
  • He said he thought I'd "come around once I got used to the idea." That was four days ago.
  • She's been sleeping in her car in the church parking lot. My husband is at his brother's.
  • His whole family is calling me heartless. Saying I threw an elderly woman onto the street over a misunderstanding.
  • But it wasn't a misunderstanding. She moved into my house without permission, threw out my belongings, and told me to my face I have no say in my own home.
  • My husband helped her do it. His sister sent this long text about how family takes care of each other and I'm destroying their family over pride.
  • But I'm the one whose home got invaded. Whose husband picked his mother over basic respect.
  • Am I the asshole for changing the locks and making her homeless? with ALL UPDATES
