Employee finds out their place of work is closing via Facebook post: 'That’s the notice I got. No discussion in person beforehand. No phone call. No text'

Imagine finding out you were out of a job… via a social media post. 

The thing about social media is that we're often messing around and finding out. Who among us hasn't found out some information that they would have rather avoided? Maybe you see a photo of your ex with someone new. Maybe you see a picture of your friends from an event that you were clearly not invited to. Maybe someone tags you in a really unflattering photo. These are the dangers of browsing social media. Sometimes we end up getting implicated in something that we didn't want to. But it rarely has to do with our jobs. Rarely do we browse social media and find out something unsavory about work. That is, unless you're this person. 

There are ways to go about treating your employees that are basic and fundamental. Everyone wants to be treated with respect, and everyone deserves respect. There are certain rules you don't want to break. One of them is keeping an open and honest line of communication with your employees. If something is going on in the business, they have a right to know because it affects them as well. If there is turmoil under the hood, then it's only right to tell your employees. They might even be able to help in the situation. What you don't want to do is leave them in the dark until it's too late. Nobody likes to be blindsided, and it rarely has to happen that way.

  • But that's what happened in this story, in a pretty dramatic fashion. An employee happened to be browsing social media until they came across something that stopped them in their tracks. No, it wasn't that their high school ex was announcing their engagement. It wasn't that their favorite store was having a big sale. It was that they were about to be out of a job. The problem (among many problems) was that they had no idea that this was in store for them. They were completely blindsided by the news, and it left a sour taste in their mouths.     I found out I no longer have a job from a Facebook post.

    The business I work for posted a "we're closing our doors for good in five days" post, attempting to entice customers for one last blowout bash. That's the notice I got. No discussion in person beforehand. No phone call. No text. Nothing in the scheduling app. I work tonight, tomorrow, and the day we close. WTF?

    whattheputt954 I got fired by coupon once. I managed a Honeybaked Ham when I was 20. We received coupons to hand to our customers that said "This location closing after Christmas" It was the week before Christmas. December 24th was my last day. Still enjoy their smoked turkey, but that corporate entity can genuinely consume a satchel of richards.
