We all need a little escape in life.

When things get tough, sometimes you just want to get taken away. Maybe you've had a rough day, week, or life, and you're done with this version of reality. You've suffered disappointment after disappointment, and you're tired of feeling glum. Life has offered up its many let-downs, and you have swallowed them dutifully. You have no choice but to just go with the flow, and the flow happens to be misery. You don't get a choice in what you feel sometimes, and this week you're feeling blue. Not red, not yellow, and definitely not green. You've got a case of the cobalts, and life is not going to let you forget that. You're reminded that to be alive is to suffer, at least in this plane. But you have a compelling idea.

You lace up your shoes, head out the door, and drive to your nearest movie theater. You stand in line, buy way too expensive popcorn, and you say, "I'd like to buy a ticket to [insert popular sci-fi feature film]." Then you cozy up in your reclining theater seat, toss back a handful of Sno-Caps, and for a little over 2 hours, you get to be somewhere else. Somewhere where your problems don't exist. Somewhere where worms are huge, and heroes win. Somewhere that, most importantly, is not here. It is actually light-years and worlds away from your current reality.

It's so far away that it doesn't even exist. You get to travel to an alternate dimension, and you didn't even have to get into a time machine. You know how costly and clunky those things are- you're always ending up in the Ice Age when you meant to go to the Stone Age. But not here, at the movies, we're whisked away to something completely outside our own reality, and we couldn't be more grateful for it. This is why we go to the movies. This is why we have science fiction. And when we don't have science fiction, we have science fiction memes. And good thing we have a bunch of them here today.
