It's hard to find a roommate who fits well with your lifestyle. In the case of these roomies, all was well until one guy decided that all of the groceries were communal, even though he wasn't buying any of it…  

Not only was he not contributing to the grocery budget, but he was eating the meals that one roommate would make for himself on Sunday to last the entire week. It's called "meal prepping," and it is not as cheap as you think it would be. Though it helps prevent you from ordering out, with the prices of groceries these days, it can sometimes be even more expensive. 

He tried to speak to his roommate about his poor behavior. He asked him to stop eating his food. The first time he asked him nicely to stop and he said he would. The second time he said it was just a mistake. The third time he straight up just gaslit him and told him he was overreacting. 

The last straw was when he devoured a $50 prepped steak meal he had. After that, he got himself a fancy mini-fridge that had a combo lock on it.

  • Now the entitled roommate is saying he was dramatic for making that purchase, and he should be able to have access to the “communal” food. The only thing is that food was never communal. The other roommates are also unsure how to react. They think he is being dramatic, but they also understand that not all of the food is communal. So what would you do?

    I'm (27M) living with two roommates in a 3- bedroom apartment. We've been here about 8 months and things were fine until roommate A (let's call him Mike, 25M) started "sampling" my food.

  • I work long hours and meal prep on Sundays: chicken, rice, veggies, protein shakes, the works.

  • I label everything clearly with my name and dates. Mike has a habit of coming home late, drunk/high, and raiding the fridge instead of eating his own stuff.

  • First time I said something politely he apologized, said it was a one-time thing. Second time → "I only took a little, bro, chill." Third time he ate an entire batch of my $50 worth of prepped steak & veggies that was supposed to last the week.

  • When confronted he said "It's just food, don't be stingy, I'll buy you more sometime." I got fed up, bought a mini fridge with a combo lock for my bedroom and started keeping all my food there.

  • Now he's whining to the other roommate that I'm "being dramatic" and "making the house toxic" because he can't access "communal food" anymore (even though none of it was communal).

  • When it comes to living with roommates, drama is inevitable. It is important to find someone you can easily communicate with so these little dramatics can be quickly figured out. Unfortunately, for these roomies, the one was so entitled that he simply could not understand how he was not putting in the money or effort to be eating someone else's food. In our opinion, a mini-fridge with a lock does scream dramatic, but in this situation, it was totally appropriate.l

  • feyshadowgirl NTA. If he wants prepared food then he can ask nicely and chip in for grocery costs. ETA: And ask your other roommate if they will buy you dinner every time when your food is taken.
