'I got involved with that': Ryan Coogler's love of the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine hits home for all movie theater lovers

Ryan Coogler, the director of Sinners, is a true movie theater lover.

Sinners recently broke the record for most nominated film at the Oscar's of all time, proving that theatrical releases are still highly relevant. We might be tempted to hail the end of the cinema-going age, with streaming services scooping up all the business, but we'd be wrong to. As long as movie theater lovers stay strong, so will movie theaters. Ryan Coogler, the director himself, is an embodiment of that.

On a recent episode of Amy Poehler's podcast Good Hang, she asked director Ryan Coogler about his early movie theater going experiences. He neither confirms nor denies that he would sneak snacks into the movie theater (if you're not doing that, you're missing out), but he does own up to the fact that despite never being a "soda person," when the mix-and-match element was introduced, he "got involved with that." Everyone who has ever been to an AMC knows exactly what he's talking about. You buy a fountain drink cup, and then the world is your oyster. A touch screen provides an infinite array of possible combinations: do you want a little bit of Cherry Vanilla Diet Coke mixed with Zero Sugar Grape Sprite? You can have your wish, and nobody is there to judge you. You're a master of your domain, filling your cup with the perfect elixir to accompany your cinematic experience. Simple stuff like soda machines make the moviegoing experience a little more special. You don't get that when you're at home with Netflix.

Coogler knows the power of movie theaters, and he's not afraid to embrace it. Later on the podcast, he expounds "I love how it's just you in there with a bunch of different types of people... that feeling of giving yourself over to something that you don't have to control, that is a really nice feeling." It's important to have champions like him who not only understand the magic of the theatergoing experience, but hold some amount of sway in an industry that threatens to erase them. Now what's left to learn: what soda combination pairs best with twin brothers fighting off vampires in a 1920s juke joint?
