Last year, a woman ended up in an uncomfortable living situation with a roommate she had known since college. They weren't close friends; they were just two adults sharing rent, avoiding drama, and living together out of convenience. It seemed like it should have worked, but in reality, it didn't, mostly because of his personality.

The roommate often made "jokes" at her expense. He would say her work-from-home job must be "easy," call her "too sensitive" if she asked him to clean up, or give advice about how she cooked, did laundry, or parked her car. If she spoke up, he just laughed and said she was overthinking. It was never dramatic enough for a big argument, but the constant disrespect made her dread being at home.

She tried addressing it once, calmly and directly. His response was blunt: "I'm just honest. People should be tougher." That line stuck with her, and eventually inspired a change in strategy.

Instead of reacting, she stopped showing any emotion. She took his words literally. When he called her dramatic, she smiled, said "good to know," and wrote it down in her phone. When he said something wasn't a big deal, she nodded and replied, "Okay, I'll remember that." At first, he didn't notice.

Things changed when they had friends over.

He made his usual joke about her being uptight about dishes. This time, she smiled politely and said, “You’ve said honesty is important, so I appreciate you being honest.” He laughed, but it sounded awkward and unsure.
She kept this up for weeks, staying calm, pleasant, and completely neutral. She also stopped covering for him. When the landlord asked about the overflowing trash, she repeated his words: “He said it’s not a big deal.” When friends mentioned the messy living room, she explained, “He thinks people should be tougher about that stuff.”
Gradually, people started to notice. They didn’t get angry, but they raised their eyebrows and paused awkwardly. His jokes became clumsy, and he often added rushed explanations or said “just kidding” after the fact. Eventually, he confronted her and accused her of being weird and passive-aggressive.
She calmly told him she wasn’t. She was just following his advice and trying not to be sensitive.
He went quiet. After that, the comments mostly stopped. He never apologized, but his behavior changed. A month later, he moved out and told others she was “hard to read.”
She considered it a win.
