Employee rejoices in new 4-day work week policy, only to be let go so the company can compensate for the change: 'It's not personal'

Just when this guy thought he had the perfect work situation, his boss went ahead and pulled the rug out from under him.

The cultural conversation around the four-day work week is one of those hot-button discussions that will inevitably divide folks. After all, people who have been working five days a week might feel like if they had to endure these working conditions for decades, why shouldn't future generations? If divisive reactions to the concept of remote work proved anything, it was that we have yet to work out our generational differences over our collective approach to employment and office culture.

As for four-day work weeks, there has been a slow, societal push toward this model. In fact, some studies have shown that this schedule can actually improve employee satisfaction while also lowering some costs for employers in the long term. It will take a while for boomers and Gen X folks to wrap their brains around this concept, but I do believe that eventually, we will see the day when the rise in popularity of the four-day work week will only force employers to adapt to this model in order to compete.

For this employee, he found himself in the ideal situation… but only for a few weeks.

It turns out that adapting to a four-day work week required this company to make tough budgetary decisions to allow for this change to take place. Unfortunately, that led to a round of layoffs that included the author of this anecdote.
No one on his team seemed to expect that this change was going to lead to some folks losing their jobs entirely. Clearly, this change took place before the company was actually ready to implement the model. Chances are that most employees would not agree to this schedule if they knew several people on their respective teams would then be at risk of losing employment.
Hopefully, there will be a day when we can earn the privileges of four-day work weeks without sacrificing job security along the way.
