Most people are only doing their jobs to get paid, so the least that could happen is that they get paid on time.

There are legitimate reasons that a salary payment may be delayed, but often, such an issue boils down to management not having enough respect for the time and energy that their employees put into their jobs with the hopes of being compensated. Anybody who has ever had to wait longer than expected for their next paycheck can tell you what a headache it is to have to postpone paying bills or go into an overdraft just to buy some groceries. Prompt payment is necessary for a lot of workers just to be able to live their normal lives.

When getting paid late becomes a pattern in the workplace, it is inevitable that some are going to protest against it. To want to be paid on time is a reasonable demand in most circumstances. Still, it can feel intimidating to bring this up with a boss, especially if it seems like they do not want things to change. It is the kind of situation that puts tactful communication skills to the test, even though it should be the most acceptable of demands.

  • In this story, an employee had agreed to a contract in which they were paid weekly, but it was not working out so well for them. Supposedly, this meant that their boss would write them a check every Friday for the hours they had worked that week.

    However, there were multiple occasions when this boss was not in the office on Fridays, meaning that they didn't get paid. When they asked for this not to happen again, he mocked the fact that they had texted him over the weekend asking to be paid. They weren't sure if they had been taking things too far by contacting him over the weekend when he didn't pay them.

  • ManufacturerWest 1760 I would be looking for work. It's unreasonable for him to not have a system in place to pay on time every time. It also sounds like this job doesn't really pay you well so I'm not sure why you would put up with it.

  • StuffonBookshelfs You probably should not be a 1099 employee at all. You should consult a tax professional to make sure that you're not going to get slammed with taxes when you go to file (amongst other things).

  • gtfofr Original Poster's Reply That's what I was thinking, that I just won't go in on Monday if I don't get paid this weekend. But then his reaction to that could lead to more toxicity or punishment and I'm not trying to bite the hand that feeds me.

  • notreallylucy First step is turn off autopay. Pay all your bills manually until you find another job. Next step is establish an emergency fund that you can pull from for emergencies like not getting paid. I know that might not be easy because it sounds like your close to maxed out on your income. Try to cut back anywhere you can so you can save even just $20 every week.
