'We don’t want to “steal” our neighbor’s cat': After being out in the cold, a black cat finds warmth next door and refuses to leave her new furmily

It started with a tiny black cat looking for warmth, and slowly turned into her finding a second home.

A tiny black cat started hanging around a couple's yard not long after they moved into their first home. She was shy, skinny, and kept falling asleep outside the window where their own cat liked to sit and chirp at her. Thinking she might be a stray, they checked with the neighbors and learned she technically had a home, but life there wasn't easy. Her kittens didn't make her life easy and she mostly slept outside. 

When temperatures dropped during Thanksgiving weekend, they brought her into the guest room so she could warm up. After that, they set up a box on the back porch, and she slept there almost every night. She spent her days running around the yard, playing near the house, and rarely went far.

During another cold snap, she ran straight into the house early one morning. The neighbor said she didn't mind, especially in extreme weather, and mentioned the cat usually slept under their deck year-round. Phone numbers were exchanged to keep tabs on the cat, but no follow-up ever came.

Now, with snow on the ground and bitter Midwest cold, the little cat has been inside for five days. She plays with the dog, gets along with their cat, and seems perfectly at home. No one planned this. The cat just kept choosing warmth, safety, and company, one cold night at a time.

Putting a cat outside, especially in the winter, over bullying from other cats does not show they care about her, it shows they're irresponsible and want to take the easy road. Give them the easiest road possible and offer to take her off their hands permanently

    Foreign-Meeti... That cat has made her choice and it's you. In the other place, she's not appreciated and bullying is allowed. At yours, she knows she's seen and cared for. Try this: keep her indoors and see how long it takes for the owners to swing by and ask about her. My guess is never. Enjoy her! She's certainly enjoying you!

    julesk Keep the cat safe inside. If your neighbors miss her, they know where you live and have your contact info. They said it was okay if she came inside and that the kittens would let her inside their house so I doubt they miss her.

    Leaving her outside because the other cats are bullying her is obviously NOT a humane option. I would present it to them like "our cat and dog have bonded with her and she with them and now she doesn't want to leave and she certainly doesn't want to live outside anymore". Offer to buy her from them.

  • That cat has already made up her mind. She’s not visiting anymore, she’s living there. She came inside during the cold, stayed, bonded with the other pets, and settled in like she belonged all along. When a cat chooses comfort, safety, and routine and keeps coming back for it, that’s usually the answer. Labels aside, she’s found her place.
