'I always talk to my fish after work': 36-year-old gets jealous that his boyfriend talks to his fish more than he talks to him

If he wants his boyfriend to talk to him, he should at least seem interested in what he has to say.

One of the best things about animals is that they can't talk back. Some might say that's the worst thing about them, but I believe that not knowing what my dog is thinking is what keeps our relationship intact. Pets can come to you enthusiastically with love in their heart or stare at you with a blank expression, and both of these dispositions are perfect for one-sided communication. You can tell your dog everything that's on your mind, and they won't be burdened with knowing the darkness within you. They might be able to tell that you're upset, and respond accordingly, but they won't gossip about your troubles with other people. Pets also don't interrupt you or give unsolicited advice, which is always a plus. 

We've all heard of the stereotype of the sad lady who has no romantic partner and only has the company of her cat. I'd much rather be her than someone who has a partner and a pet, and can only confide in the pet. There are so many people who have relationships and live with people who quite literally do not care a lick about them. They give them only the bare minimum attention they ask for, and sometimes they can't even bother to do that. If your boyfriend would rather talk to his fish than talk to you, there's something seriously wrong with your relationship.

  • blue_eyes_forever This is really sad... it sounds to me like you are telling your stories to your fish because you know your boyfriend won't be interested and you need to discuss it with someone, even a fish. It sounds like you need a good friend or a boyfriend who actually cares about your day. I understand interests vary, but it's the bare minimum to show interest in your partners stories.

  • Like_the_rainbow Your bf can get over himself. Either HE listens to your rant of the day, OR he accepts that you have your quality time with your fish. You need this rant to blow off steam after a work day. He can not just expect you to sit next to him quiet on the couch while he watches tv. He can get a blowup doll for that....or maybe...his own fish?

He's showing you that he feels entitled to the whole of your shared space when it suits him, and your work stuff inconveniences him whereas you bottling it all up is better for him but not for you? Ugh. Not a keeper unless you rant about work for — hours and never resolve anything...?
