Sometimes you can get so wrapped up in your own head that you lose the ability to see the forest for the trees. You are caught in your emotional baggage, and you need somebody else to come around and remind you of the truth. The man in the story had an immediate gut reaction to his father, wanting to give him money. He saw it as an insult or a way to patronize him without actually doing any good. He wondered if he would be better off turning down the money instead of just swallowing it and taking it. But he thought twice about it, and wondered if he wasn't just getting in his own way. It was no strings, attached money, after all, and who is in a position to say no to that? So he got some perspective from the Internet, which helped put things into place in his mind.
