  • Man having an argument with his wife, feeling cornered.
  • AITA for picking my moms side over my wife’s in baby names

137M have been married to my wife34 for 6 years. We're expecting our second child (first girl though.) My wife and I have been going back and forth on baby names but one name she really liked was my deceased sister. When I was 4, I had a
  • sister who was a little over a year who died in a car accident that left my father disabled. I don't really remember much of it but I remember the hit it took on
  • my mother and father and the years after. Also to my wife it wasn't even about honoring my sister it was just a plus, she just really liked the name.
  • We were discussing it with my mother and my mother had asked her nicely please do not name her that. My wife was upset and said well I really like the name. I took my mothers side because it was traumatic
  • for her and I would never want to put that pressure on my daughter as well. When we got home my wife was furious and said we're suppose to be deciding baby names not my mom and I, and how we could name her whatever we wanted it wasn't up to anyone else.
  • Man kissing his adorable daughter on the cheek.
  • I defended my mother still and we got into a big argument. She basically told me I should go sleep at my moms then, I ended up sleeping on the couch. We are still arguing a bit about it.
  • Add: I didn't bring my mother into this. We were at my mothers house and my wife and mother were discussing the baby.
  • L2N2 NTA. Has your wife even considered the pain this would bring to others? That's really selfish. There are tens of thousands of other names.
  • sbinjax NTA. Being reminded of your dead child every time you speak your grandchild's name is a cruelty I wouldn't wish on anyone. What the hell is up with your wife?
  • MistySky1999 Your mistake was letting your mother get involved with the name choosing. It is always ONLY a discussion between the two parents of the child. So if YOU didn't like the name for any reason, including that it upset you, that "no" means that name is off the list; there was zero point in Mommy weighing in and it being public like that. Mommy could have said "that's very upsetting" and then talked to you about it alone voicing her concerns and hurt. You should be the point man for deali
  • OP Horror_Cell3270 She wasn't involved at all in the name choosing and she's never been, even with my son my mother never suggested any names then or now. My wife and my mom were talking about the baby and baby names had came up and my wife told my mother it was a name she really liked and was considering. That's when my mother asked her not to name her that.
  • Pixichixi NTA. Baby names are 2 yes decisions no matter the reasons. You are deciding with your wife, you said no, there's thousands more to choose from. It's also pretty insensitive of your wife to get that worked up over a randomly chosen name which is that painful for someone that will be in your life.
  • rosysoprano NAH here, but don't triangulate your mom in the future if you want to stay married. Naming a child is between the parents, keep it between you and your wife and leave mommy dearest out of future discussions.
  • OP Horror_Cell3270 My mother has never been involved in naming the baby. Not with my son and not now. My wife was just discussing her ideas.
  • Rosie Melodi YTA for involving your mother. That being said, your wife is also an asshole for lacking empathy (if the reason is it'll cause pain and grief). Yes you can name your child whatever you want but you made the mistake of getting your mom's opinion. If you name your child that, it'll definitely. seem like your wife did not give a rats ass. I personally have mixed feelings on this because your wife is set on that name and she truly does have a right to name her child as she wishes but sh
  • OP Horror_Cell3270 I didn't involve my mother. We were at my mothers and my wife and mom were discussing the baby. I added that

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole: > I took my mothers side in baby names due to the traumatic history of it. My wife was angry by this and caused a big argument. Maybe I'm the ah because it is up to us Help keep the sub engaging! #Don't downvote assholes! Do upvote interesting posts! Click Here For Our Rule
  • Nta. I don't think you or your mom are asking for much. I understand pregnancy hormones can take a part in making everything intense, but she's blowing this out of proportion. There's millions of names to choose from. She doesn't HAVE to name your daughter that name simply because she likes it and is hyper fixating on it.
  • LJ_Ink138 ESH.... Your wife is definitely being inconsiderate and rude about it. But you also choose to make the issue between your wife and your mom. The whole situation could have been resolved with you saying to your mom that you understand where she is coming from and will consider it, but also talk to your wife that using the name makes YOU uncomfortable and not just your mom. Names should definitely be decided between parents and no one else, so I| agree with your wife about that, so then
