Usually for Valentine's Day, I detest going out. I don't want to be amongst all the other Hallmark couples dressed up to the T, in matching red and pink outfits, booking a restaurant reservation somewhere to have a busy environment, and potentially bad service since it'll be packed. I really prefer quiet evenings and to be with my partner alone on days like these. A simple daytime picnic, a beautiful view with cheese and drinking some bubbles. A cozy evening of making some simple pasta or ordering takeout, just being together watching a movie or scrolling cutesy memes .

The holiday traces back to ancient Roman traditions and later became linked to Saint Valentine, though much of its modern form developed over centuries through poetry, folklore, and evolving customs. By the Middle Ages, it was already associated with courtly love, and by the 19th century, exchanging cards and tokens of affection had become popular in Europe and beyond.

Today, Valentine’s Day can look many different ways. For some, it’s an opportunity to celebrate a partner with thoughtful gestures or shared experiences. For others, it’s about friendship—sometimes called “Galentine’s” celebrations—or expressing gratitude to family members. Many people also use the day as a reminder of self-love: taking time to care for themselves, reflect, or do something meaningful.
