Employee creates program for managing personal workload, refuses to let management share it with entire department: 'There's no offer of extra pay, promotion, or formal recognition'

Just because workplaces like it when you're productive doesn't mean that you are going to get rewarded for it.

I mean, there would not be so many people out there quiet quitting or figuring out how to work two remote roles at once if putting in a good effort at work was an absolute guarantee of career progress and satisfaction. It is an open secret that plenty of employees are simply trying to survive one day to the next, and do not feel like they have the energy or the willpower to bring their all to the office.

The reality is that many companies rely on productive employees to get results, but are not interested in compensating them fairly for this hard work. They just want to congratulate themselves on making a good investment and try to get the most out of it they can before said investment decides to job hop. If it eventually builds up to something that is worth it, putting extra effort into a job can be a sensible idea. However, it is only fair that the employee who engages with this gets some kind of recognition for what they have done at the same time.

    Management was impressed and wanted to roll this out to the entire department, but she refused to do that without having some control over proceedings. Coworkers felt like she was gatekeeping, and she wasn't sure if she was asking for too much.

  • BreqsCousin You need location specific legal advice here, not "am I the asshole". Depending on your contract it could be that the system legally belongs to the company. You built it while employed for them and there's no way you can argue that it's not related to your work. The fact that you did it "in your own time" may be irrelevant.

  • Mediocre_Ant_437 Be very careful since you are filling YOUR database with THEIR information as that could really make a difference in whether they can demand directly from you or fire you for breach of security. Once you check with an attorney, find another job. They will not let this go.

  • Heykurat NTA. You used your own equipment, on your own time. It's your property, period. DO NOT let them intimidate you into giving it to them. They are absolutely not entitled to it. If you wish, license it, but get a lawyer and be careful writing up that contract. But you may want to find another job. ETA: it's yours both legally and morally. Their claim that they are morally entitled to it is incorrect.

  • padam__padam NTA. One of the main sticking points is you built it using your personal equipment and personal time. They're grasping at straws to bully you into giving it to them for free. I'm also not surprised that any tracking file is something they can build too, they just didn't choose to. May be a little bit reactionary from me, but I'd think about updating my resume and casually looking at new jobs out there. I'm concerned they'll bully you into quitting since won't give them the file.
