Student calls out entitled classmate for trying to plagiarize their work: 'I'm never offering to help him again'

All this student was trying to do was help out a desperate friend.

This author noticed that their classmate was behind academically after having to miss class for several weeks due to being sick. When she volunteered to give him a helping hand, she had no idea what she was getting herself into.

It turns out that this manchild was looking for more than just a little academic support. He was basically looking for a personal assistant. It started simple. The author met up with him to walk him through what he missed in school during his absence. 

Quickly, however, this escalated into a morally ambiguous dynamic in which the classmate became increasingly dependent on the author to do literally everything for him.

  • So many high achievers know this kind of dynamic all too well. I remember when I was in middle school, the mother of a fellow classmate would call me on the phone to help her do her son's homework for him. As a shy kid, I would indulge the kid's mother. After all, she was older than me. Thankfully, this was someone who didn't trust her own kid to finish his work, and it never got to the point of plagiarism. 

    Still, it was the first time (and, sadly, not the last) where I would be entrusted to essentially hold a classmate's hand through every math problem. So it's hard not to empathize with this author's struggles. However, both students are old enough now to be more independent. If they were in middle school, maybe it would be harder to establish these boundaries. But now, they're on their own, and the author might be learning a valuable lesson here in drawing a line when it's necessary.

  • Entitled classmate thinks I'm his personal assistant

    My classmate missed a lot of lectures because of personal reasons. We got a minor project on the content covered in those lectures so I offered to help him with any doubts or help that he needs because I felt bad for him.

  • He took this to mean that he can call or text me at any hour and grill me about my progress on the project work, chide me about not doing it fast enough, demand that I complete my project soon and hand it over to him so he can "understand better" and do his based on mine (read, copy my work and make minor changes just to make sure it won't get flagged) and call me to ask if I can just handover my leftover materials as well so he won't have to go out and buy everything.

  • He also calls whenever he intends to start his work and expects me to drop everything else and explain whatever he needs explained right then and there.

  • He has now started making comments about how I'm not really being very helpful because I refuse to dance to his tunes or be available at his beck and call.

  • MeatofKings An important lesson gained from maturity is understanding the difference between someone who's in trouble from poor decision- making (such as procrastination) versus bad luck (getting a nail in your tire). The easy way to create an entitled brat is to save them from their poor decisions. Too many helicopter parents keep doing this and seeding the world with more brats.

  • Professional-Spare13 I had a classmate like this and it was in classes for our major. He began missing classes and labs for frivolous reasons. He missed a field lab where we out on rock outcrops taking measurements, sketching it, making notes about the structure, etc. Our TA said we could share our notes with the other students in order to write up our assignment.
