New kitten left to fend for itself when owner and 21-year-old student roommate leave for days on end, owner brings in friend to pet sit but blames everything on roommate: 'I feel really guilty because I'd never ever leave a kitten alone'

Thank goodness the story isn't as it appears, and the kitten isn't left to fend for itself in the end. 

What happens between roommates could be the title of any newspaper. There always seems to be drama there, even when things seem fine. Like here, when a cat owner decides to go visit her boyfriend for a few days and leaves her roommate in charge of her new kitten. Leaving someone else to take care of a kitten is a bit daring, but that's not the point. The roommate agrees, and they have a tacit understanding. But on the day the owner is supposed to arrive home, the roommate decides to go see family and stay overnight for days. This now creates tension with the owner's change of plans to stay a few days longer with her boyfriend. Instead of understanding and taking responsibility, she accuses her roommate of being selfish.   • The cat owner is the one who should be ashamed and guilty. It's okay that they have an agreement about the kitten, and that the roommate will take care of her kitten while she's away. But if she decides to change her plans, that needs to be apparent immediately, and she has to know that ultimately her kitten's well-being is in her hands, not the roommate. This is part of why I hate having roommates! Always issues that arise with everything.

  • Something similar happened to me. I had two roommates, and I left for 4 days. One of them said he would take care of my cat while I was gone, but the other said she refused. She was home the whole time, but said she “didn't want to be responsible” for my pet since it wasn't hers. I still can't understand or wrap my head around her hang up that she couldn't feed him once in a while if I couldn't. I even flew abroad and had to get a friend to come and take care of my little cat. Thank goodness for friends and not roommates!
