It's important to have friends you can geek out with.

If you don't have friends that you can be silly with, do you even have friends to begin with? A true friend is somebody who you can let your freak flag fly around. A true friend doesn't care that you know way too many Star Trek facts and you need to save them all right now. They will do more than just listen; they will be interested, and they will have something to add. You can't expect this out of everyone, but you can expect this out of your true friends. You need these people who understand your geeky predictions. It's important to be surrounded by people who aren't gonna judge your interests, but instead cherish them, and share them with you.

Otherwise, you'll implode with your own nerdiness, unable to express it around anyone else. But sometimes those people don't exist in real life. Maybe they don't exist in your school or in your hometown, but they do exist on the Internet. All that matters is that you find your tribe, no matter where it is or who it is. But it's important to be surrounded by people who you can fully let go around. It just makes life a little bit more fun. And then your shared interests can bring you closer together.

That's what's wonderful about fandom. It immediately gives you something in common with somebody with whom you might not have anything else in common. And memes are a big part of fandom.
