One of the many things people learn after getting a pet is that the concept of personal space is no longer a thing. It might sound dramatic, but anyone who has ever lived with a cat or dog knows that boundaries disappear the second you bring them into your life. The moment a pet decides it wants to sit somewhere, that spot automatically becomes theirs, even if that spot happens to be your face, your keyboard, or the exact place you were just about to sit.
Pets seem to operate under the assumption that everything about you also belongs to them. Your lap? Obviously theirs. Your pillow? Also theirs. Your freshly opened laptop during an important work call? Definitely theirs now. It’s not unusual to try to get something done at home only to realize that a cat has decided your keyboard is the perfect place for a nap, or that your dog believes the best seat in the house is directly on top of you.

Cats are particularly famous for their total disregard of personal boundaries. They will happily step on your face at five in the morning, sit directly on whatever object you are currently using, or wedge themselves into your arms the second you try to read a book. Somehow they always manage to find the exact moment when your space is most needed and claim it for themselves.
Dogs, on the other hand, bring a slightly different energy. While cats tend to invade quietly and with confidence, dogs usually approach the situation with overwhelming enthusiasm. A large dog that believes he is still a tiny lap puppy can easily turn a calm moment on the couch into a full on cuddle session.

Of course, the funny thing is that most pet owners secretly love these moments. Sure, it can be kind of inconvenient when you suddenly realize you can’t move because a sleeping animal has claimed your legs as a pillow. But those chaotic, affectionate interruptions are also part of what makes living with pets so entertaining.
At the end of the day, pets don’t really care about concepts like personal space, if they see a comfortable spot, especially if that spot happens to be on top of their favorite human, they’re going to take it. And honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
