Regardless of how they came into their human's life, whether they were scooped up from the Walmart parking lot or sat in an adoption clinic for five minutes, cats will begin to run the household the moment their toe beans cross the threshold. As eager servants, humans will happily provide expensive cat trees that'll never be climbed and designer little boxes that will be continually disrespected. Cats earned that level of pampering, I suppose, when they became the dominant species of pet.
It's the cat's demeanor that sets them apart from the dogs, the fish, and the birds. Cats are prideful and gracious, cuddly and reserved, making their human companions wonder at every moment which version of their pet they'll be witnessing today. Are we going to get scratched or loved endlessly? That's one bet that every cat lover is willing to gamble.
Why? Because there's simply nothing better than being chosen by a feline. When they trust and love a person unconditionally, it's as if they've won the kitty lottery and that, my friends, is an unbreakable bond between hooman and catto. So even if your cat seems like a little freeloader, be reminded that they bring so much to the household and carry along with them the burden of our sustained happiness. Even though it costs them nothing to bake biscuits on our stomachs or to purr when they're sitting in our laps, it brings us joy all the same.
