3-year-old girl and her mom share a magical Harry Potter moment in the park when the local teens play along with a wholesome bit: 'She got a glimpse of real magic'

A little girl was totally charmed by the teenagers in the park, forging core memories with her mom, the neighbors, and her budding interest in Harry Potter.

Everyone remembers the first time they watched Harry Potter. Enchanted by the twinkling soundtrack and bewitched by the wholesome yet captivating rags-to-witches tale, it's easy for any kid to become hypnotized by the Potterverse vibrance. This 3-year-old will never forget the magical moment she shared with a couple of local kids when she and her mom stumbled upon a theatrical bit under their "troll bridge" at the park.

Playing along with the little girl's wonder, these teens may not realize how wholesome and sweet their Potterhead rendition would be, but as a parent, this was a priceless experience of real-world magic that goes beyond Harry Potter lore. Sometimes, human beings out in the world really are the best, and they show you with small, sweet acts of random kindness… Or just some really convincing acting, troll sounds, and a touch of spellcasting.

  • So my 3 year old daughter and I were on our way to the park....

    On the way to the park we pass over a small bridge that my daughter calls the troll bridge.

  • This bridge is about 20 feet over a small stream. On this day there were a bunch of angsty teens hanging out both on and under the bridge.

  • Right at the entrance to the bridge is a girl who is doodling in a notebook.

  • She had overheard my daughter call the bridge the troll bridge. Before I even knew what was going on she had told the boys in the water to pretend to be trolls and with out skipping a beat they starting snarling and splashing in the water.

  • Normally, teenagers are dirtbags, but these kids proved otherwise. 

    Oftentimes marked by their angst and jeering at the younger kids, teenagers reject the family structure to set out on their own independence. But deep down, every teenager is just a kid chomping at the bit to play make-believe, swing on the swingset, and have a tea party with their teddy bears. Nobody ever truly grows out of a game of make-believe, and what's so inspiring about this story is that the kids didn't feel like they were trying to act older or be “cool” in front of their friends. 

    They just wanted to play, too. 

  • All of a sudden the girl at the entrance produces one of those Harry Potter magic wands that look just like the ones in the movie and hands it to my daughter.

  • At that very moment 3 more kids show up and just seem to know what is going on.

  • My daughter runs over to the middle of the bridge and starts throwing spells at the kids in the water below.

  • They both act as if they were hit by the spells and fall into the water screaming in pain.

  • All the kids were cheering for my daughter and the look on her face was unbelievable.

  • She was grinning from ear to ear and was blown away. She got a glimpse of real magic and to be honest so did I.

  • We have never seen them again. But whoever they are, I'm very grateful for them. They did something that may seem trivial but it was a very special moment my daughter and I share and I'll never forget it as long as I live.

  • Everyone needs a little bit of magic in their lives, whether real or imaginary. Sometimes that magic comes in the form of a kind gesture or a smile from a stranger, and in the case of this mom and her daughter, it came in the form of real-world spells that would always remind a kid of her strength, courage, and cleverness, as she vanquished imaginary foes just like Harry Potter would've. 

    Play on, people, because when the world gets too serious, sometimes we all could use a little make-believe.

Just earlier today I told my daughter about the blue- ringed octopus and how poisonous it is. 5 minutes later I'm cooking dinner and she comes in with a her octopus stuffy and tosses it at me.
