Divorced homeowner discovers her retired neighbor is introducing himself to her contractors as a co-owner and making decisions about her house renovation, then acts insulted when she finally tells him to stop

  • Woman sitting in a doorway in sunlight, resting her arm on her head and looking off thoughtfully.
  • My retired neighbor keeps introducing himself to contractors like he co owns my house

I bought my place last spring after a divroce. It is a small older house on a quiet street, and I have been fixing it up slowly as I can handle it.
  • Nothing dramatic, just a porch repair, some tree work, replacing an ugly side gate, that kind of thing.
  • My next door neighbor is a retired guy in his late 60s who has lived here forever.
  • At first I thought he was just one of those overly chatty neighbors. He would come outside whenever anyone was working at my house and tell them little neighborhood facts, like where the old water line runs or which company did the roof ten years ago.
  • Middle-aged man with a short beard wearing a white shirt, standing outdoors and looking ahead.
  • Slightly annoying, but not a huge deal. Then it got stranger. When the arborist came, my neighbor walked into my yard and started telling him which branches to take off because leaves fall into his gutters.
  • When I had the porch measured, he stood beside the contractor and said, "We alreayd know we want to keep the same footprint." I corrected him and said no, I was widening the steps.
  • Last week it turned into an actual probelm. My contractor called me to confirm a post placement change because "the gentleman outside said you wanted it adjusted." I said what gentleman.
  • He said, "Your husband, I assumed?" I live alone. I went outside and my neighbor was literally holding the plans while talking through options like he had hired them.
  • I told him, pretty firmly, that he does not speak for me, does not come onto my property while people are working, and does not get to present himself like part owner because he happens to live next door.
  • He got very offended and said he was just trying to save me from expensive mistakes becasue contractors "hear things differently from women living by themselves." That made me even madder.
  • I told him that sentence was exactly the issue. Now he is being cold and has apparently told two other neighbors that I humiliated him for "being helpful." Part of me feels bad because maybe he genuinely thinks this is neighborly.
  • But part of me is creeped out that he felt comfortable making decisions about my house like I was some temporary stand in waiting for a real adult to show up.
  • StellarKittyy The audacity of this man acting like u need a guardian is insane. Fences make neighbors.
  • Historical-State-275 No. He does't think this is neighborly. He was doing exactly what you thought he was doing and is mad you put your foot down. Good for you.
  • Terangela Is this real? You are under reacting.
  • OldeManKenobi A formal notice of trespass should be in order...expeditiously.
  • runnerkim Oh I bet the other neighbors agree with you. I wouldn't worry about it but instead be grateful he's mad and won't come over anymore.
  • Nightjar_7Q This would have made my skin crawl too. Wandering over with neighborhood trivia is one thing, but inserting himself into contractor conversations, holding your plans, and basically auditioning for the role of house husband you never hired is a whole. different problem
