Blind cat who was in a shelter for years because people thought he was "weird-looking" finally gets adopted by the kindest human and her kitty: 'It makes me so sad that he spent so long alone'

People sometimes choose not to adopt cats for the strangest reasons, and it is their loss. Because they end up skipping out on some of the most loving, sweetest cats out there. 

There are always some cats who stay in shelters for longer than others. Usually, the reason cats are in shelters for a long time is simply because they are cats rather than kittens. The second a cat passes the age of one, it is considered "old" in shelters - more difficult to adopt. Other times, it's even more upsetting reasons. People don't adopt cats who are "ugly". Shelters sometimes label cats badly, telling people, "this is the worst cat in the world," and then wondering why that cat is not finding a home. 

There is no such thing as a "bad cat", only a cat who has not found the right human yet. The blind cat in this story was skipped out on not because of its blindness but because it looks "weird", according to other people.

    My perfect boy Höd was in different shelters for years because people thought he was weird looking. It makes me so sad that he spent so long alone but also happy because it meant that I was able to adopt him. I wish I was able to find him sooner so he didn't have to stay so long.

  • We understand why you are sad about this. We think that if we had been in your situation, we would have felt the same way sometimes. But that is the wrong way to look at it. You saved this cat. From loneliness, from a life in a shelter, from never being this happy ever. You are giving this cat everything that he has ever wanted and things that he never even knew he could want. This cat is happy with you, and that it what matters.

  • The park is certainly not something that he ever would have gotten to experience had he continued living in a shelter. He's getting to live the best life that he can. The fact that he enjoys it rather than being scared of the unfamiliar surroundings lets us know, more than anything else, that you know him and what he needs and that he is safe with you. We wish you both many, many more happy and healthy years together.

    nosleepforthedreamer Confession: I'm a huge cat person, but definitely would be nervous to adopt a disabled cat out of fear I wouldn't be able to keep up with taking care of them. Good on OP and everyone who does. I have no idea what it's like to care for a cat who is blind or something but perhaps education and awareness-spreading about what it's like from people who do have a disabled cat would help the rest of us feel less lost about how it works. Many pets to this precious boy. <3

    SquirrelPositive2666 OP I always love educating people about blind cats! For Höd sometimes it seems like he isn't blind he navigates the world so well just using his senses! The only adjustments we really had to make was showing him where everything important is and making sure the other cats don't steal his treats.

  • We understand the hesitation that some people might have about adopting disabled cats. It comes from a good place. It comes from wanting to make sure that these cats are happy. What we forget is that cats don't know that they are disabled. They don't understand the concept. Cats live their best lives, no matter what their situation is. Don't worry, they will find a way to cause trouble even if they are blind. And you will love every second of it.
