Absent boss gets backlash for demanding fully remote team to come into the office "5 days a week (8 AM - 5 PM)"

  • A businessman walks on the street with a briefcase and coffee on his way to work.
  • I want to make him miserable during working hours

I work in an office space where the traffic is unbearable no matter what the time is, think peak traffic New York. My team and I worked from home since 2020 and we have always been productive, never had silly excuses for not coming to work,
  • we were barely on any leave or took sick leave and we were even happy having our lunch at our desks as were home anyway. A
  • few months back we were asked to return to the office, just 3 times a week and we can leave early(2pm) with the guarantee we will log on again when we get home, we were okay with this.
  • Recently the boss demanded everyone back....5 days a week, full working hours (8AM-5PM), it was fine with the sales team as they make commission and the commission structure is very nice
  • to say the least. The sales team also have "ghost meetings" (scheduling meetings with clients. that don't exist to avoid going into the office). My team is on a fixed salary and the increases this year were absolutely pathetic
  • as well. Most of my team's travel time home is 2 hours home with the traffic, without traffic it will be 40 min-1 hour max. With petrol prices going up and about to go up again we requested that we only do traveling twice a week
  • or we go back to 3 times a week but leave at 2pm missing peak traffic. He outright refused and was even offended we suggested this. Statements were made but
  • the one that stood out was "You get paid enough, make a plan". To put it in perspective, this man makes 9 times my salary a month, and I am a manager...
  • My question is, how can I be maliciously compliant in the office to the point where the boss doesn't want us to be in that much anymore but also to not get a warning or even fired. Keep in mind I am in South Africa so firing someone is not easy at all.
  • For anyone that is gonna ask, no he barely comes to the office because he is playing golf on most days instead of working. We cant leave early because he can monitor our statuses on Teams.
  • A businessman runs late, sprinting down the street while holding a briefcase and coffee.
  • FrequentWay Leave your teams running on your phone as active. Then drive home early.
  • Fearless-Truth-... Work to your contract. Any way some of you can carpool??
  • NightmareUC OP. Unfortunately none of us stay near each other, 2 of my team members stay near each other atleast, they can definitely, but the rest of us are not close enough to each other. Contracts are only negotiable if the boss agrees and he declines any meeting discussion regarding asking for a raise or contract change.
