As the employee states clearly, there were incentives for other factions of the company (such as the sales team) to follow an in-person policy. For some of those team members, going to the office in person was even convenient for them. But most of the folks on the author's team live at least two hours outside of the city. Moreover, the work appeared to be quite solitary, with little need for in-person collaboration.
Still, their stubborn boss refused to back down. Despite numerous attempts to negotiate with him, all to no avail, this employee decided that if he was going to have to make the laborious commute to the office, he was going to, at the very least, make life difficult for his employer.
Our suggestion would be to figure out his golf schedule and intentionally set mandatory meetings during his usual tee time. Then, he'll either demonstrate just how negligent he is as a leader or he'll have to give up something precious to him, like the rest of the team.
