Why they fit so perfectly well into a fairytale is this rare combination of qualities. Fairytales like to juxtapose magic, mischief, and mayhem with the soft, the delicate, and the whimsical. Birds, cats, dogs, frogs, or any other animal just don't come close to the majestic essence that a fox has. And no other animal solely lives in a forest! Fairytales live in a space where reality loosens its grip and symbolism takes over. They aren't just stories—they're emotional landscapes, filled with forests that feel endless, characters that represent something deeper, and moments that linger long after the tale ends.

Most people grow up on some sort of fairytale. It doesn't mean it has to be Disney, or Grimm's Brothers, but most of us have some sort of notion of folktales. They've persisted since the beginning of humanity, from spoken word and ear to ear, to movies and books that we have now. I grew up on Disney movies, but I also had some little picture books of fairytales that were more accurate to the European originals. I had The Princess and the Pea, and the book was so tiny, also giving away some sort of secret about the tale. I also had Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid. But if you know the original at all, you know that she doesn't end up with Prince Charming and a pair of ambulating legs. The original is beautiful in its own way, just like foxes are.
