So, what did people think about this assignment?
It's an interesting conundrum. It makes sense to be opposed to AI for a bevy of reasons!
But, as some people pointed out, the teacher might be trying to expound upon a bigger point about what AI generation means in an artistic setting:

I don't think this is a bad assignment. People being able to interpret and detect AI cr*p is a serious issue. Whether or not that is what the teacher is doing is a different issue. Do the assignment, then spend the entire discussion pointing out all the reasons it's bad. You're paying for the class, take what you want from it.

You're learning how to talk about art. You're learning how to spot AI generated "art". You might even learn that it's hard to talk about an art peice thats AI generated, which also might be part of the point. Either way, it's an art history class? AI art undoubtedly has a place in the discussion of art history.

I think I’m missing the problem. If it’s an actual evaluation of the quality of slop, then you have the opportunity to honestly and critically evaluate it as such (which appears to be the point of the assignment).

Then again, other people thought this person was right to protest the assignment:

Talk to the professor.
I had one last semester who was all-in on ai slop. I voiced my concern and was allowed to opt-out of the assignment. It was a minor thing, thankfully, but I exercised my opt-out and that was that
DrawerVisible6979Step 1: boot up Minecraft
Step 2: make a super flat world consisting only of sand and obsidian
Step 3: spawn in ~100 endermen
Step 4: wait until the assignment is due
Step 5: take screenshot of the area, and submit it as your assignment
Step 6: when asked say it's a commentary on AI art
Assignment completed? Yes. Protest made? Yes. Money made by open AI: $0

You could just take already existing AI images and talk about those pieces. Your professor wouldn’t know you didn’t generate it.
And if things are as bad as it sounds, just report it to the school.
