Grandparents disparage adopted 4-year-old, get upset when daughter bans them from seeing her: 'My dad joked real relatives matter more'

Family is about attitude, not just genetics.

There are plenty of people out there who make a point of embracing their 'chosen' family, but can't stand their biological relatives. On top of that, there are plenty of kids who become a part of a family through adoption. While it isn't something that is an option for every prospective parent, those who go ahead with it are generally expected to have the attitude that an adopted kid is just as much a family member as anybody who is directly related to them. That kind of acceptance is crucial if this arrangement is going to go well.

Unfortunately, just because adoptive parents are ready to welcome these children into their lives does not always mean that everybody around them is. Friends and relatives can sometimes differ in their opinions about the benefits of adoption. It is not uncommon for them to feel like there is something illegitimate about adopting a child, as opposed to having one that shares their genetics.

This can show up in how adopted kids get treated, and naturally, any good parent is not going to want to expose their children to that. It leaves them in an awkward position if their family is less accepting.

A woman and her husband were delighted to finally be able to adopt a 4-year-old girl, and hoped that it would be a smooth transition to welcome her into their extended family. However, they were disappointed to realize that the woman's parents were singling out their daughter because she was adopted.
After some inappropriate comments at an extended family gathering, the mom decided to tell her parents that they were not allowed to see her daughter unless they could show the proper respect to her. They protested at her keeping her child away from them, and she wasn't sure if she had taken things too far.
Am I wrong for banning my parents from seeing my daughter?
