  • HR Power Trip After A Leaked Group Chat...

Curious if this has happened to anyone, but I already know they stepped out of line doing this. For context I am not employed by this company, I am self-employed for the past 4 years, but just happen to be in the group chat that got leaked.
  • Just to keep it short, the group chat I'm in with a couple of friends and co-workers of a friend mostly used to arrange game nights, meet ups, and other things got leaked after we added a newer employee that has been there for 5/6 months (I actually had no clue until after). Some jokes were said and I guess it didn't land well with her, plus
  • complaints about management, and r de customers. HR investigated and terminated everyone that worked in the chat, mind you this is a small mom and pop food place so HR consisted of 2 people. Anyways we found out and removed her from the chat.
  • You'd think that would be the end of it...no, they decided to try and contact the other induviduals that don't work for them. Out of the four, they were able to reach me after finding my instagram page and saying, "It is imperative that I talk to them to not ruin my career reputation". Haven't responded and have no plans on doing so.
  • Unfortunate set of events for the people that got fired, but from what I was told they're happy to be fired beacause the place had a toxic environment from both management and owners. But lesson learned, mixing friend groups and co-workers into one chat is not a good idea.
  • Commenters gave their takes on the story.

HelgaTheNamesOl... Didn't land well with her. Theres the problem
  • principium_est Tale as old as group chats. I've been lectured before... Sh talk is for in person without a paper trail.
  • Relative-Doubt3343 Do you think what was said was actually a violation worthy of HR getting involved? Seems weird to me because it's a private chat and just sound like dumb gossiping...
  • springbored "Never put anything in writing that you wouldn't want on the front page"
  • Queasy_Moose720 Yall are so quick to be on OP's side. This story seems real vague and convenient that you don't actually say. what any of the jokes/comments are. Obviously we all vent about work and nobody can relate quite like a coworker but you can't make a group with coworkers to talk about
  • A group chat invite notification appears on a iphone screen
  • work in offensive ways and then get mad when somebody reports you for it lol. If you're so confident in the group chat not being the issue and this person just being a snitch, maybe share some more details about what was actually said and leaked. The content of what was reported is literally what determines whether or not they were justified to "leak" the chats.
  • Qxg6 >Some jokes were said and I guess it didn't land well with her, plus complaints about management, and r de customers. >the place had a toxic environment Dude. From your own words, you and your buddies are the problem.
  • But to answer your question, yes I've seen many many people fired for stuff they were dumb enough to put in writing. And ya, if there is an allegation of harassment, or employment lawyers are involved, they are going try to talk to everyone they can - even if you don't work for them.
  • Purple-Haku That's insane. Just ignore that company and apply somewhere else
  • Florida Miami Man I would have told them to go EAD. I really don't know why people would participate in a group chat with co workers. They are not your friends. In 2026, it's crazy how people keep falling for the same sh.
  • MuchDevelopment... That sounds like the start to a future lawsuit. Threatening your future business is not a good way to start a conversation. Document it all.
  • Cubonecollector Never add the new person
  • Stillpoetic45 Wow, i know of two events that have some similarities. There is a company that popped up right as everything was closing down. My guess is that they over promised to get the contract, and was hoping to spin up as the new money flowed in. They had
  • sometime like a work slack where they said information shouldn't be shared but in most cases it was the quickest way to get an answer on a question when you were on a call. I am assuming there were some jokes that may have made it to the inappropriate level because eventually they started firing people and
  • that chat was the only common denominator. A person I know who was in the chat told me that all he contributed were a few "lol" but over a week they walked people down the hall to fire them and they didn't even let them come and get their
  • stuff. They would never clarify why but based on some of the employees fired that was probably the reason in addition to trying to trim costs to hire more people at a lower salary. The second one was similar to your situation I was in this chat but working in a different department and
  • someone new was added and the humor was not to their taste. As opposed to just exiting the chat, that person took it to HR. She also cited another incident to which she followed an employee to an empty conference room and eavesdropped on her conversation with her husband. Apparently there
  • was a bit of spice as married people do and she used both in her claim. everyone in the group was reached out to. I had a big boss that saw the exchange and shield me "I can't have them wasting your time on this" in the end a couple of people had to sit home for a bit.
