AITA for sending my landlord the security footage that got my neighbor evicted after he filed a false noise complaint against me?
“I live in a small building, six units, relatively quiet. My downstairs neighbor and I have never had any issues. We wave in the hallway; that is basically the extent of it. About three months ago, I got a notice from my landlord saying a noise complaint had been filed against me for late-night disturbances. I was confused because I keep pretty normal hours, I work early shifts, and I am usually in bed by ten.”
-
"I asked my landlord for details. He said the complaint said I was having people over regularly after midnight and playing loud music
That has genuinely never happened. Not once.
My building has a camera in the hallway that covers the entry to my unit. I asked my landlord if he could check the footage for the dates in the complaint. He pulled it, and there was nothing. no guests, no gatherings, lights out by ten every night."

Apartment hallway -
"While he was in the system, he noticed something else. My neighbor had filed three complaints against me over six weeks. He had also filed complaints against two other tenants in the building for things the footage did not support.
I did not ask for him to be evicted. I just asked my landlord to look at the footage so my name was clear."
-
"My neighbor was evicted about a month later. I found out through another tenant that he had been trying to force turnover in the building for reasons I do not fully understand.
I said he filed false complaints against me. There was nothing to talk about.
AITA?"

It's, honestly, kind of sad that this guy feels guilty for simply clearing his own name. Sure, it is not cool to take someone's home away, but this guy kind of did it to himself. He was lying and trying to get everyone else evicted. Instead, one of the accused was proven innocent, and several others along with him. Karma came into play, and now the lying accuser was the one who got evicted. That sounds like justice served and boss behavior to me, bestie.

I definitely know people who would say that it was an AH move since you should never do something that can cause someone to lose their housing. Those people are called morons. People like OP’s former neighbor need to learn accountability for their actions, and doing nothing about that kind of behavior can cause innocent people to lose their homes instead.

This is a pretty easy one. NTA. How could you be when you did what you needed to do to establish your own lack of guilt. The neighbor playing games did it to himself. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

First : you didn't get your neighbor evicted - they suffered the consequences of their own actions.
Second - you didn't even send in footage. The property already had it.
Standing up for yourself, arguing against false claims made about you, and setting boundaries are all healthy things.
Nta to your neighbor, but kind of an ah to yourself.

NTA, it is refreshing to hear about a landlord that does his job.

NTA - why are you feeling bad about throwing out a guy for a good reason (specifically, that he was trying to throw you out for no reason)? Have some self-respect.

I'd say the landlord did his duty by taking a VERY NECESSARY, responsible, and moral action that protected you, himself, and everyone else from a malicious predator. How could (inadvertently!) triggering necessary action possibly be wrong? Your evicted hunter is no doubt already planning trouble for other unfortunates wherever he goes. Some people are like that.
