Even if she was making less than her husband or overspending to the max, that is none of her mother-in-law's business. She does not get a say in how he conducts his finances now that he's a married adult man. Anyone who thinks that it's okay for a parent to try to tell their adult child how to live their life shouldn't get married, because they still have the mentality of a child. Asking your parents for budgeting advice is one thing, but if you're not asking for their help, they shouldn't be giving it to you. 99% of the time, it is not helpful.

He will let his mother take the reins on parenting decisions. She will micromanage everything her daughter-in-law does and insist that she follow antiquated parenting standards that weren't even up to date when she was first parenting 30 years ago. The daughter-in-law will always be the villain in her eyes, and you don't want someone who sees you as a villain ever taking care of your children alone.
